I thought it'd be cool if we had a thread where we could discuss our favourite art styles and/or share some work by artists that we draw inspiration from. I'll start off with two artists' to whom I've taken a liking to, lately; Steve Purcell Sam&Max: Bad Day on the Moon, 1992-For his work on Sam&Max, Purcell pens a world filled to the brim with strange individuals and odd litter, but even though you may see the Eiffel Tower on Java, somehow the composition still seems to center around the canine detective and his lagomorph partner perfectly, never distracting. I like Purcell's style because the panels are filled with weird and out-of-place things, complementing the characters and the (short) stories. Purcell also has a good grasp on shading. Mike Mignola Hellboy: Wake the Devil, 1996-I like Mignola's style because he uses very sharp lines to surround the pure black shades (sharp penceling in general). As you might've guessed I have a huge erection for black-white art, and Mignola delivers quite well on that in my opinion. I like this style because it makes great use of the dark shades (even the coloured versions of the art usually don't use much more colour *see cover*) and also Kirby Dots. Whilst Mignola uses less scenery in his panels, colours are often used to accompany the mood or characters protrayed (i.e. Hellboy is often depicted against a red background, whilst his enemies use colder colours like white or blue). This artistic choice kind of reminds me of Morris' and Goscinny's work on 'Lucky Luke', which would often have panels coloured completely red during moments of tension.

No. You'll only get banned if you talk about Andrew Dobson. Two of my favorite artists happen to have DeviantArt accounts, so I'll just use those. Of course there's the legendary Shaun "Endling" Healey. His skill is unmatched, in my eyes. It's just so perfect.

Is there anything in particular that attracts you to their style? An artist with DA account that I'm very font of myself is 'Pyromaniac'. I really love the way he draws faces and the way he designs characters in general; http://pyromaniac.deviantart.com/

What attracts me to Endling is his variety. He can either make a breathtakingly beautiful scene or a cartoonish one. Zilleniose is more of a fluffly artist. And when it comes to fluffly, nothing if more fluffly than her cute characters.

If you like cute stuff then I think you'd like Pyromaniac's series of 'Rainbow Princess' drawings. If you ever find yourself with some spare them I'd highly recommand flipping through his gallery.

Personally, I've got a lot of inspirations. Most of them have worked in comicbooks, including Steve McNiven, Mike Deodato, David Finch and Humberto Ramos. But my biggest inspirations are: Leinil YuHis style is so unique in a way that he creates very dark figures feeling both human and monstrous. The quentity of detail in his work is amazing as you can see. My other inspiration is: Scottie YoungHe's got a style that's just so anatomically incorrect that looks correct that I really love. You can feel the cuteness in his drawing. His using of black lines is amazing too.

Those are quite nice. It's almost like a warped Farside comic.

my favorite artist is a traditional artist- and though he draws mostly manga style drawings, he can draw a variety of other things. Mark Crilley.

I figured you for a Joodlez fan, Geno. He's got some amazing stuff. I'm assuming you like MikeInel, as well?

Joodlez is a girl! And actually no, I'm not a fan of his at all really. I used to be, but when he got into using 3D models as reference for all of his artwork and animation he lost my admiration. I understand it, but it really shouldn't be an all-the-time thing like his style has turned in to. I digress.

I guess it's a matter of opinion. I quite like how smooth his animations are and if his still art suffers for it, I don't mind. What about Meago?
