I don't entirely know if this would fall under art, but this is probably the best section to put it.

I've been working on concept designs for operating systems for a while now, and I'd like some feedback on the designs.


The first OS design I ever made. I've worked on it on-and-off for a few months.


Something I threw together in 10 minutes. It's only meant to be a general idea of how an OS that's very loosely "boxed in" could look. It's a design I want to go back to eventually, and work on some more.


My latest design, which I put together today. It took about an hour to make, and is finished aside from the Windows 7 libraries being a placeholder.

Any thoughts?

The basic idea behind it is that it's a welcome center that would remind you of important events before you even reached the desktop. It's also intentionally designed to mimic the Windows (Namely Vista Aero, of all things) look and feel.

The basic plan I have in mind is that moving up/down is moving between layers, which are mostly unrelated. From there, moving left or right takes you between pages, which are things you might want to do/check from each layer. Any feedback?

Heyo. I quite like the simplicity of the first smartphone design, but the length of the schedule items seems too convenient. What would it look like if say, I had a party at 2:30 and a meeting at 4:00? Would you resize the text to make it fit neatly in the circle?

Also, what would it look like if I had more than two items on my schedule? Would it show me only those two nearest to the current time?

Yes and yes, actually. If it was impossible to make text fit in a way that could be read, it would either scroll, or expand when tapped.

Right now I'm working on this - the basic idea is that the start menu can be a bit of a hub. The tiles open in the start menu, as opposed to another window, which saves a bit of clutter, and makes some things more convenient. I'm not done with the design yet, (Hence the mostly empty help section) and I'm fully open to suggestions.

so it's like, a mix between the old and new windows start menus?

In a way, yeah. The tiles were inspired by Win8, but unlike the Win8.2/8.1.2/9 start menu that was showed off at BUILD, they don't exist to open apps in Metro or give information directly, they're applications for the start menu itself. I'm going to be fixing up the awkward space at the top row of tiles, and adding an arrow to scroll through them there, if more existed. Applications would be able to be used from the start menu, like a mail client. No need to open a browser or a full client to check your mail, just use a lightweight one straight from the start menu.

oh, that's kinda cool.
sometimes i get pretty annoyed opening metro apps and waiting for them to load just to do something simple, so that sounds like something i'd use.

I plan to! I actually have a mostly prepared build here right now, if you feel like trying it. There's a few issues, mostly with scroll bars, that exist since I'm working on them, but there's nothing majorly wrong with it.



Probably the biggest feature right now is that notifications in-game are see-through, like glass. There's enough color in them to be able to easily read their contents, but they aren't totally blocking the game anymore.
