Well, imagine if in place of those systems, there was a gaming service. Eventually, the service would shut down, and you wouldn't be able to play your games. Got it? Got it.

Say an SNES game breaks, and it is not playable anymore, they still own it, but it is null.

Same with a steam game, you'd own it, but you wouldn't be able to play it.

But a broken cartridge can be used for alternative tasks; like a paperweight. Try doing that with a non-working downloaded game!
