That's not really a typo, Koopa is it's own plural, like Pokémon.

I'll just call them Koopa Troopas. And Bowser is very clearly a Koopa, as his japanese name is literally 'Koopa'.

How he breathes fire, I don't know. I'm assuming it has something to do with a birth defect, which then gets passed along to his sons. The shells were probably custom made to have spikes to show leadership (Since Koopa Troopas can be kicked out of their shells, that implies they can get new ones).

Ahh, if you have played Mario & Luigi 3, you will note there is a big pipe on Bowser where his fire comes from, if someone or something blocks it, Bowser will be unable to breath fire. In the game, the bug that blocked it, was a boss for Mario and Luigi.

oh and whatever happened to bowsers first kids like Wendy and Larry when bowser Jr. came they just forgot all about them

Koopa actually comes from the korean dish's name Kuppa, but I don't know what's that. No, Koopa doesn't means turtle.

That was probably the easiest boss in that game.
