well it looks horrible because it has so many shades and it looks like a half of a pillowshade.

I'm all for constructive criticism. I've even posted this on ConceptArt to get nice criticism on it. That is not criticism. Why? Because you ignored things that you could have actually critiqued and instead went for the shading, which just so happens to be the thing we're disputing here. Sandvich, can you please tell me where the light in my picture is coming from?

This is a picture I made a while ago, but ended up ditching because I wasn't satisfied with the anatomy. Now, I'm working on figure drawing in a variety of different methods. And no, you really can't shade. 2. ABSOLUTELY. Every sprite shading tutorial includes light source recommendations. Most people would recommend one from the top right or top left for mobile sprites because it falls evenly on the form. Pillow shading is not just poor shading, it's also the obscuring of a light source. It can't even be considered correct if the light source were from the front in many cases. 3. Yeah, I sorta do. Y'know? If you really know it, then show it with foreshortening. Show it with full body shots. Show it with some extreme poses. 4. I keep this section to the animator's survival guide in the top level of my note taking program. | | | | Quote: "Many cartoonists and animators say that the very reason they want to make cartoons is because they want to get AWAY from realism and the realistic world into the realms of imagination. They'll correctly point out that most cartoon animals DON'T look like animals- They're designs, mental constructs. Mickey ain't no mouse. Sylvester ain't no cat. They look more like circus clowns than animals. Frank Thomas always says, 'If you saw Lady and the Tramp walking down the road, there's no way that you are going to buy that they're real dogs.'
But to make these designs work the MOVEMENTS have to be believable - which leads back to realism and real actions, which leads back to studying the human or animal figure to understand its structure and movement. What we want to achieve isn't realism, it's believability.
While Tex Avery released the animator from the more literal approach in order to do the impossible, he was only able to do so successfully because his animation was done by Disney drop-outs who already had 'the Disney knowledge' of articulation, weight, etc. So, ironically, his rebellion, his 'going the other route', had its basis in an underlying knowledge of realism
But don't confuse drawing with a map! We're animating MASSES, not lines. So we have to understand how mass works in reality. In order to depart from reality, our work has to be based ON reality."
The book has a fairly large portion devoted to nothing but life drawing. And this is a book dedicated to cartooning and animation, quite a different subject entirely. Life drawing is essential to the work of any artist, fantasy or realistic.
1: You've got to be kidding me. I'm sure I can shade better than you without a 3d object which does the shading automatically. 2: I still don't think it looks flat. The squirtle you posted thar does. 3: Its still not that important. But I'll try to make the light source clearer in my following works 4: I do know it. And I'm too lazy to do a full body PA 5: Well, Dukes isn't animal or human, so what do I do? But I'll try to make it a little better in my next PAs I just want to let you know that I'm not going to fix Dukes; too lazy. But I'll try to do better and follow your advice next time. I'm sorry for over reacting.

1. Huh. What do you mean 3d object that does the shading for you? My piece was done from imagination, no references. 3. Tell me, how do you see objects? Light. All of form and shape is based upon light. If there is no light, then you see nothing. Light sources are powerful. 4. Full body shots are how you learn proper anatomy. If you do it from the waist up, then you're cutting out half the piece. They're just as important as the rest of it. 5. My character isn't animal or human either. He isn't even based upon organic matter. Learning real human anatomy helps no matter what you're working on. Thanks for the apology. I wasn't expecting you to fix it, just try better in the future. Do some pencil or pen sketches. Drawing is the basis for all visual arts. Not matter what you're working on, drawing helps.

1. Well, if its 3d, you have some light coming and there's shading. With light, comes shade. 3. I'll get a clear light-source next time 4. Once again, I'm lazy. Just trying to get all the shading done takes a lot of time. I'm not a patient man. Maybe when I feel like it. 5. I will improve with that. I hope to do better in the future and I'm going to be taking some art classes I was invited to. Its a pretty good place, so I'm sure I'll be able to learn more that I can put into my spriting.

To clarify, to a fictional means, as to be known Deux (or as his alternate Universe self, Dukes) is a fictional character; He has pseudo-humanoid anatomy. He carries some traits of Human-like anatomy.
Perhaps I can post so sketches of what i have been working on.
If that is, My scanner will work..

That would've helped me. Its kinda hard to base it off of a sprite. But oh well. Do you (overall) like it?
