Because the other day I found out that I have completely lost my sense of smell, yet the doctor confirmed I still have my sense of taste, he says that the two should be gone if I lost my smell.
Is this a normal occurrence? Or is he just wrong about the whole thing?

There are a couple of former nursing majors
Note that I'm not one of them when I say this, but I feel like he probably knows what he's talking about
Are you sure you're not mistaken? Have you been around any particularly strong scents lately, ones you'd recognize? Did you do something that might've f*** up your nose lately?

Were there any notable events leading up to you losing your sense of smell, or did it seem to happen out of nowhere? In my experience with check ups and medical staff in general, doctors tend to be very busy and don't look deeply into small non-threatening issues like yours. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't spend too much time thinking about what the issue could be. However, he's right about taste and smell being very closely related. Your sensation of taste is greatly accentuated by the smells associated with whatever you're eating. If you can't smell then food will still have a taste, but it should seem very toned down. Is that not happening to you?

I have been around strong scents, apparently, but I haven't been able to smell them so I never noticed. It kind of just stopped. I only noticed when a whole room of people started choking on some really bad smell and I didn't realise there was something I was meant to be smelling. Ever since then I have never smelt any other smell, nor have I reacted to anything that should disturb my nose. And as for taste, I haven't notice a change in how well I taste things, it hasn't seemed to have gotten worse. I can still taste the food I eat.

Do you have ANY sense of smell? Could you possibly just have a high tolerance for bad smells or a weak nose in general? I have a weak sense of smell personally, so I also don't react to the bad smells that other people do, and my sense of taste is fine. To test it, I would try to go up to something that has a very strong, distinct scent (like an incense, car freshener, pine-sol, or anything like that) to see if you can smell it at all.

No, none at all. I tried every powerful smelling object in my house, and I felt nothing. I used to have a great sense of smell, that's why I find it weird.

Well, I just saw a specialist in Sydney and he said that I am fine. However the actual glands/nerves that cause the smelling sensation have shrivelled up from lack of stimulation.
So pretty much, if they can't re-stimulate it, I actually have permanently lost my sense of smell, yet my taste is fully functional.

Well, from what I understand smells weren't going to those glands and so that gland kind of died. So now I have nothing to smell with, but things like smoke will still irritate me to a point. And since I haven't actually damaged any part of my nose I still have taste.
