Ok, so here's how it goes. (note: this is very wordy but kind of an explanation to why I'm leaving, if you want the short and sweet version, skip to the bottom_
I'm leaving for about a month. I won't be able to access the computer and I won't be able to post.
I am unhappy with my current situation and realize that there needs to be change. I am not achieving the grades I or my parents would like, I am not being productive enough, I am not accomplishing my goals.
I have looked to the east for help. I looked at the successful people from Japan, Korea, China and India... What do all these people have in common? they have a better school system and are smarter. Why? what makes them better than us? what makes these people in other countries that are poorer, and have less freedom than us better? I realized something today. They are better because they have limits.
When you think of a limitation, you think of something that drags you down. I now know a limitation is something that you must simply find a way to work around, or with. Take for example pixel art. The area you work with is incredibly small, therefore it takes work and practice to be able to work with it, and because of that, you have extremely cool stuff. You have limits, and limits force creativity.
You must be creative to come up with a way to live with/or overcome a limit. Successful people in India and China are generally poor, they know if they do not get a good education, then they will probably live in a slum. So all of their energy is focused on their education. People in Japan live on a small island with limited amounts of space. Therefore they find a way to make more room by making things small, efficient and minimalistic. People in Korea again have limitations, their parents, peers and everyone around them expect them to do well, so much in fact that there is a saying "sleep 5 hours and fail a test, sleep 4 hours and pass" (as in study for another hour). And yet, you look all around the internet and modern day society and find these people can work within the limits. How is that guy so good at DDR? How is that girl so good at drawing? How do they play their instruments so well? They use their time effectively. Every moment they don't spend studying they spend doing something they love.
That is what I am going to do. If I do not get the grades I want, no computer access. If I do not accomplish my goals, then no friends or socializing. For me, saying "I am going to study more" doesn't work. I'm going to try limitation. People can do amazing things under extreme limitation. Case in point, a film whose budget was $500. It looked better than anything I've ever seen attempted at that budget
Link to videoand I heard a story about an esteemed director remaking an old film of his, but he wanted it to be amazing, so he and a young director worked together, and the young director imposed limitations on him (3 frames before a cut, certain camera, etc.) and the man was able to come up with a film that was truly amazing (I am going to watch the documentary for this in a few days)
Anyways the TL;DR version of this is that I want to succeed and push myself to become the person I've always wanted to be. And putting up limitations will help me do that... unfortunately for you guys that means I'll be gone for a month... But when I get back I'm going to continue work on the projects I've taken up here.
(also, bluemage, my printer is being all wack, I'm going to have to toy around with it more tomorrow. I finished your art trade and should have it up within the week.)
