Yes, but if you play a sequal before the original, you will miss a lot of features included in later games. A great example of this is the Ratchet&Clank series; if you don't play Ratchet&Clank 1 before any other game, it will feel un-playable, because you'd be too accustomed to the strife walking feature. The earlier game won't feel good without it.

The point: Often games will improve in the sequal, which is the very point of a sequal. But this means that if you play the original after the sequal, it's likely that you'll like the game less then it's worth by default (due to it missing aspects from the sequals).
