From what I heard they gave it to him as more of a motivator. But this is really not a good thing for him. People are going to be all over him now, urging him to get stuff done.
Oh, yeah, and he was nominated two freaking weeks into his presidency. When he hadn't done anything at all. So..... how does that work?
He might deserve it a few months down the road, but he hasn't earned it yet.

You mean people will urge him to get stuff done like the president is SUPPOSED to?

That's harsh...

Okay, I just got back from the Nobel Museum in Gamla Stan, and I dug up a few pieces of info for my own benefit, and some of it is already from the article proper but I should share to cover all bases.

Concerning the nomination process, it usually starts the August before the year itself. That is, if this December 10th is the date of the ceremony (as it usually is), then the nomination process would have started with letters for nominations of laureates in August last year. Apparently, they are to narrow down the 200-300 candidates by February to a mere handful.

Also, on the small entry concerning Obama, it is written that the he was awarded for "extraordinary effort to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."

Hey, I did that too but I didn't get a prize for it.

Thanks, Thaiberium. Intresting info. I guess that in this case, Obama gets an "A" for effort. That and a Nobel Peace Prize.

I just got a literary award for putting for extrodinary effort to write the best novel in the universe. Sadly I never finished it.

Anyway, I support the U.S president, however I cannot condone such s***. That man doesn't deserve a peace prize for effort because there are actually some people who can and have gotten results. Also, Obama shouldn't even have been elgible for the prize at all. What it comes down to is Obama earning a peace prize for not being George W. Bush.

He shouldn't win an award for it, but it is a good thing that he isn't Bush 2.0.
And I'm not even a liberal.

And that's a bad thing?

It makesit meaningless.
The worst part about it is that this was an excellent opportunity to do something noble, such as accepting the award on the behalf of our soldiers.
But his head's much to inflated for that.

That's not it. If he says anything about being in favor of the war, he loses the democrats who vote on his Health Care bill. On the other side, if he says he's going to pull out the troops, he loses other people. So, in the end, he does nothing so he can try to please everyone.

Which makes him lose even more.
And don't forget, it wouldn't be on behalf of any war, but for the people fighting it.

Which makes it look like he's in favor of the war. He won't do anything that displeases a chunk of the congress outside of the bills.

Let's hope something good from Obama, I think he's very carismatic. :D
