Let's compromise.

You start out with a couple newcomers, and use them to unlock the rest.

or you realise (like most devs already have) that unlockable characters in fighting games are dumb and you let the player use who they want from the start

instead of making them use characters they don't want to use to unlock characters they do want to use

Well I guess if you're basing who you want to play as solely on the character themselves. (which is obviously what people do) But you could really like how a character plays and want to main them even if you don't like the actual character. That's happened plenty of times to me. By just giving you a few newcomers to start off with, it would allow you to try out characters you wouldn't normally play as while also giving you the satisfaction of unlocking your favorite characters.

I'm not basing it on the characters at all, stop assuming things.

Let's say I mained Falcon in Melee. I then get Brawl. I have to unlock him just so I can get back to playing as him. That's f*** stupid.

Let's say I mained R.O.B in Brawl and he returns in SSB4. He was unlockable in Brawl, so I had to either play through the story mode or do however many VS battles the game wanted me to do. That was already dumb. I want to main him again in SSB4. I have to unlock him again. That's really f*** dumb.

If I want to try out other characters, I can do that myself. The game shouldn't force me to by not letting me play as who I want to from the start.

I know that some people feel like unlockable characters gives them more to do but it's genuinely detrimental to actually playing the game

I actually I agree with her on this one. The worst thing Sakurai did with this is that he made Ness and Falcon starters in Melee after being unlockables in Smash64, but made them unlockables again in Brawl that was just retarded.

Also has anyone else noticed that the character who has been top of the tier list in each game has always been a starter.

How many times do we have to tell you this; Kyuubits a MALE. Anyways, at least with Ness it only took 5 matches, which flies by fast when you're starting to play.

I wasn't talking about you specifically, and I was also talking about newcomers being unlockables. I agree that past characters shouldn't be unlockables.

Looks at Clubby with my head tilted. I know, but like void and auraka I'm going to refer to it as such so please calm your tits. It's not hurting you is it?

Damn Ness was really easy to earn if it only took five matches to win or reflect ten projectiles.

Well, you don't have to be such a dick about it heh heh, get it? But yeah, I just assumed you still thought it was a she because a while back you were hitting on him xD.
Back on the topic of unlockable Newcomers, I think maybe just have the veterans starters but make the rest unlockable, of course it'd be nice to see some others unlockables if this wasn't happening.

What new characters that have been revealed do you think should be starters or unloackables.

Hmm... I think the WFT, Villager, and Little Mac should be starters, while Rosalina could be a unlockable

We all also have to remember that this game's been in development for over 2 years now so the roster at this point is pretty much set in stone, with plenty not revealed yet obviously. I just hope that there's more variety in the cast and their unlock methods aren't dumb like in Brawl. Personally, I think that the 3rd party should be starters since they're what a lot of people turn themselves toward.
