First of all, are there any outstanding features you want? You might as well use RPG Maker if your just going to make a normal RPG...

If you just want a battle system, learn the language of RPG Maker - I believe XP uses RGSS. If you think about it RPG Maker is NOT limited if you just want a couple unique things - if you were going for an mmorpg with dynamic POV then don't use it... but with a simple script you can rearrange a menu in a matter of seconds. (Changed coords in scripts is just a matter of reading which is used for changing menu positions)

You're missing the point. I don't want to rely on Game engines.

Ok... I know of a company that's made enough money from there RPG maker game to start a DS game... but if you really insist I can't stop you. As for the RPG question, check out YoshiEgg's coder topic.

Wow...simply wow. I can't believe it. I'll still use RPG maker but not until I learn C++.

Previous experience and all around conventional wisdom does say that starting an RPG as your first project or when you are inexperienced is usually a bad idea.

Indeed it is, but most people don't have the patience to do *otherwise.

I have another question. Where can I find a good IDE for Actionscript 3?

So pretty much you're focusing on just C++ and Actionscript yes? Its gonna take quite a long time to learn those

perhaps a sticky of some kind should be arranged to answer these questions - "an introduction to programming" or some such
