I'm just growing curious as to what stance they'll take on unlockable characters.
I think unlocking characters is a really great mechanic that was at it's finest in Melee. The sheer amount of stuff you had to unlock, the fact that there weren't even enough ? Space for you to REALIZE how much you had to unlock, loved it.
Brawl felt like it eliminated a lot of that, it was too easy to unlock everybody. And, given how much stuff they are revealing on the site, I have to figure most of these guys won!t be unlockables

Unlocking characters is dumb in fighting games and smash bros isn't any different
not only does it stop you from trying out all the characters at the start to see which one you'd wanna main, it's also pointless when you can just play online and see people using the unlockable characters anyway
and besides, brawl only made unlocking things easy if you did SSE. and if you honestly think the whole "play the game for 24 hours to unlock Mewtwo!" thing was good then lmao f*** off

I agree to some extent but honestly unlocking a character is one of the most exciting parts of a fighting game (as far as single player stuff goes, I mean). I was disappointed that some were too easy in Brawl and I am constantly disappointed by more traditional fighters that don't have secret characters at all
But anyway like I said last time we talked about this the best solution is to just have an "unlock all characters" cheat code that disables saving. You still have to earn the characters but if you're just playing at a friend's house or want to have a little tournament, that pretty much pleases everyone

"Pic of the day. Here are the familiar capsules--these guys deserve a prize for being in every single game. We gave them a cute redesign by shortening their length a bit." They're so adorable and shiny oh em gee

I think the best way to handle unlockable characters in smash bros is to have the unlock methods that for the most part aren't super time consuming. That way you could just look them up and get all the characters in one sitting if you want but you can still have the experience of finding them yourself if you want to.
Brawl was quick through SSE but that kind of missed the point of having unlockable characters in the first place, since there's no sense of exploration when you try to figure out how to get them. You just play a single mode all the way and that gets you everyone. Might as well have had no unlocks if you're going to do that.

I would say, just probably have unlocks through just Classic and All Star Modes, just dont make it too hard, like having to beat it on Hard or higher without continuing, since not everybody can do that with any character. Or having them unlock like in Brawl: Playing an unspecified (though they should give you ambiguous milestones to reach) number of matches to unlock characters (which is great if you play with friends a lot).

I dont think Special Brawl modes count towards unlocking characters, the game says it doesnt save records from there. I could be wrong though (i never tried unlocking characters that way).
