I am not really sure, usually i don't care how a myth is created, but i think the assumption is american.

Kabuki Theater. Stagehands were dressed in all-black and were ignored by the audience. So to "hide" the ninja characters, they dressed them in the same outfit. Haven't heard that story about the Feudal Lord on the loo, though...
