Well, it gave the game a layer of community interactivity and participation, it's like Steam Workshop if you're familiar. You make something, send it in to the game, they look it over, program it, and then you can actually look at something you made through your eyes. Let's be honest, that sounds pretty appealing to people who aspire to have creative control of any kind in such a game experience.
