This is what I've been working on over the past couple of days.
I wasn't happy with the original layout of the stage so I changed it a bit.
The background is rubbish but it's just an idea for now.
So, yeah, what can I do to make it better? It's not finished but I could still use some ideas.
Also, how cool would Volvagia be as a stage hazard.. if someone could sprite him that is.

Oh right, so remember, the idea is that you would start on the Forest stage, then this one, and then Lake Hylia. It's intended as a warp stage, which is why the triforce pedestal thing on the ground is the same, to give the sense that you're warping from one to the other like in the game.

I really like this stage..

Maybe since this is in a volcano the pedestal should be a little red light-wise, no?

I know it's the inside of a volcano and everything, but isn't there a bit more to it?

What's there is good, but it's plain. There's just a rock and a bridge.

Thanks for the comments.
I changed the pedestal a bit, thanks I hadn't thought about that.
Also, I agree, it's a bit plain at the moment. Any ideas on how to make it more dynamic? Should I add a platform or two? There were a lot of pillars and rock outcrops in the fire temple so I guess I could do something with that. On the left hand side probably.

This update was just to show how I detailed the background a bit more and touched up a few bits here and there.
If there's anything else you think I should change, add, remove, let me know.

Perhaps a bit more contrast between the stage and background?
(It looks great btw!)

There's at least a few things you can add judging from these.

Look for more landmarks, like the bridge, or that little box pillar.

So, not a lot has changed, but I added some more details.
I took your guys advice, I think there is a bit more contrast between the stage and the background now, but it might need a bit more, I could maybe de-saturate the background a bit.
I was thinking about what to add, and instead of the bridge or pillar box I decided to add a magic bean pod thingy. The way I thought it would work is that when you land on it it rises and moves from left to right and disappears of the stage, only to reappear again a bit later on. It could be helpful to recover and such.
Anyway I prefer simple stages without too many platforms.

Let me know what's up.

Edit: This is the background without any editing done.

Still have some things I want to add and change a bit, but mostly I'm done with this stage I think.

OK what if you had treasure rooms, were all the items appear? You'd have to go through a certain door to get to them, but the cave doors randomly change. Just trying to think of ways to make it more interesting.
