While he may be the most popular character, i doubt they'd choose him for smash. I would actually think that they'd go with Black Mage, a Cactuar, or a Moogle. Like they did in Mario Hoops 3 on 3, and Sports Mix, since they arent game specific, and are recurring.
Thats not completly true, theres several recurring characters like Mog, Stiltskin, Cid (just the name), Boko, among others. However there is the point of Gilgamesh implying that its the same exact character across games.
