The United Farm Workers of America, originally co-founded by César Chávez, is currently campaigning for immigration reform, stating that at least half of the crop workers in America were not doing so legally in the last ten years. As a response saying that these men and women are stealing 'good American jobs', which you hear uttered quite a bit by anti-immigration lobbyists, they have started the website takeourjobs, which invites anyone to come see just how good of a job the immigrants are stealing, by taking over for and experiencing it firsthand.

It's definitely an interesting concept, and I think it's just what's needed for the pro-immigration movement to gather up some momentum, but... Am I the only one seeing some... Unfortunate implications in this?

It seems like a nice initiative, but I wonder how effective it is at addressing the opponents in America's shattered media landscape. Of course, this seems like a fairly grassroots initiative, too, so its scope could be surprising.

Anyway, there is a reason why so many Mexicans are crossing the border: NAFTA. It is also one reason why unions have been decimated, though this is largely an additional factor combined with the policies of neoliberal and neoconservative regimes in the 80s. It is ironic that the immigrants that illegally entered America driven by NAFTA are now joining organised labour.

Here you can see their press release, along with union president Rodriguez's appearance on The Colbert Report.

Edit: I just noticed that the language options for the website are English, Spanish and Thai. Maybe this is your chance to brush up your knowledge of the Thai script, Thai! ;) :P

That's dodgy, immigration creates more jobs than it takes.
