How would that work? Super Mario Bros. 2 was a dream. Having Wart in a new game is sort out of the equation since he technically doesn't exist.

And then Tatanga appears and brainwashes them.They have been bringing some of the older things back lately, like the Tanuki Tail. Hopefully they bring back some of the older guys for nostalgia's sake. @CMill Shy Guys, Birdo, and even long standing gameplay differences between Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad all came from 2.

No, SMB2 is actually set in Subcon, a 'Dreamland'. Wart took over the Dreamland and you must set the Dreamland free by defeating Wart

He's talking about the end where Mario reveals the entire adventure is a dream, not in a Dreamland. It's not a physical area.
