I would say give less priority to down special and put more start up or end lag on up smash. This would make more Mario players or users remember he has other moves.
I would give some of his moves more hitstun because I think that's what hindered him the most this demo was his combo game not being that great when compared to other characters.
Give back air more knockback growth along with back throw which also sends opponents at a more horizontal angle.

Faster Fair = Broken The sour spot hit needs better knockback and the sweet spot needs a bigger hitbox.

He doesn't need his combo capability from Smash 4, if they increased hitstun on his moves, then he would have it similar to 64 or melee.

I really like the new animations they did for mario in the most recent major patch. It made him look a lot more like his Brawl self and brought out a certain realism from him. However, I also still miss the old super mario world sprites they redid to look nice. It made me feel like I was from one of those sprite fight videos you would see from youtube or newgrounds like 'Power Star' and the like. Is it possible for them to make it so it's a skin you could switch to on the character select screen?

My goodness, I would love that so much, I miss SMW Mario in SSF2. He was great. (And maybe reviving the scrapped SMW  would be nice too, but y'know)

Haha yeah, I mean it's honestly an afterthought though. I understand that they're most likely focusing on more important fixes like priority with attacks, the look and feel of the game, bugs/glitches, and much more. I was just thinking it'd be a cool edition once everything was set in stone and polished. Plus the cool reworks they did for the smw sprites wouldn't go to waste. Yeah, I feel like having those smw sprite derivations for mario and luigi would be really cool and fitting for customization. As a programmer myself though, I can see that what they're doing with the upcoming changes that they've been posting on their website, they have a lot of stuff on their plate. I wish them the best of luck!

Dunno if it's been talked about, but similar to Sonic's up b glitch/whatever, Mario (and many others) can fastfall during his up b after he's been hit. If he hits the ground while going downwards this happens:
