Roll playing.

It's like D&D, but it's on the internet.

make up a character with your own imagination and create a story with other people about anything you'd like. Its a fun experience but takes effort.

'Course, rules apply, but that varies upon restrictions set by the RP master.

It's like writing a book with friends helping you and playing the different parts! The possibilities are endless!

Roleplaying is where one takes on a "role" or persona different then their own, and then acts that role out as faithfully as they can. It's like improvised theatre.

A player will create a character, usually by filling out a character sheet provided by the Game Master (GM). The player will then play the RP by pretending to be that character. For example, if you made a character with anger issues, he would probably react angrily if someone stepped on his foot. You'd post what you think your character would do - in this case, start screaming at the klutz. The player controlling said klutz will in turn react to your screaming, perhaps screaming back, cowering into a corner while apologizing, or stomping on your foot again. Of course, the character isn't just limited to interacting with other player characters (PC's). He can fight monsters, bribe non-player characters (NPC's), or whatever else he could do within reason. What's within reason is debatable, but common sense is a good guide.

A roleplay (or an RP) is the background for these interactions. It may have a medieval fantasy setting, with the players playing as knights and wizards trying to kill an ancient evil. The RP will have rules dictating stuff like combat, non-player characters, and anything else that comes up during play.

The GM controls everything that goes on in an RP. He (or she) will try to keep the RP fun for the players by giving them challenges and rewards, such as a dragon guarding a treasure.

In videogame terms, the character is you, the RP is the game, and the GM is the game designer. Did I explain it well enough?

In my case, yes, it was beautifully done.

There is such thing as overdoing it, however...
