Better, but you can remove the shading on the upper part of the spines entirely to empathise the lightsource. I made a mock-up of what I mean to show you;

Also, remember to keep your outlines clean and even, you had some jaggy pixels in a couple of parts.

That's the lineart after I edited your sprite. Take a look at the spikes in the outline of your latest version of the sprite and compare the two (the spikes in particular), I think you'll see what I mean.

It didn't helped too much because it gave me effects for Hi-res images, Not Pixelart.

It was pretty funny, I didn't had a good laugh in days.

That's funny that you mention that example, because I believe some Sonic games do the same thing with the blue after-image.
