I need to learn how to not be too compassionate. I end up making 10 promises, and not being able to fulfill them.

That sucks but heres a little tip
If you make a promise try to be as vague as possible, so instead of
"I promise I'll buy you a new kitten when I get the money."
go for this
"I promise to help you get a new kitten."

People expect a lot of me, so even vague promises don't work. It'll make them unhappy, which makes me unhappy, and so on so forth.

I get the same thing a lot, people set their expectations too high. Learn how to say no, heck I'm not very good at it, but it takes practice.

If I say no, they're(friends, family) gonna be unhappy. See a pattern here?

They're not very good friends or family (No offence) if they don't understand your feelings. I always live life doing what I want to do, not what I want back and not what others want me to do. It's really hard at first but eventually you'll get used to it. I have a step Sister who's really sweet and kind, however, only when she chooses to be. I don't understand how she does it but... it seems to work for her. Just look at the people around you, everyone's a mentor in their own way :)
