A particle accelerator in the US has shown compelling hints of a never-before-seen particle, researchers say.

But this is interesting.

We can see particles?

So if I could never see these particles before, is the never-before-seen one twice as hard to see?

Maybe they exist under special circumstances.

That could be.

Though the idea of "seeing" particles always seemed weird to me.

If we can't really see elements beyond their tangible form (solid, liquid, gas) and we basically create models of atoms by guessing, I always wonder how scientists know they've actually synthesized a new element, because as far as I know, we really can't see changes in matter because particles are a concept devised by scientists as a guess of what the world is made up of in its most basic form (and if we did prove they exist, how would we see it in the first place?)

They still call it Atomic theory for a reason I guess.
