You know It's funny cuz I didn't think the new dante was a bad character as a bad unrealistic creation artistically/creatively/in narrative... I thought he was well designed as an unlikable dweeblike character who eventually develops after acknowledging his true self...Or whatever.
I much rather the old DmC but I'd rather them brush up on this reboot rather than f*** with the old installments due to the fact that I only love those characters more for nostaligic reasons... the story was better in the old DmCs but the characters themselfs where a lil "unrealistic" and pretty hard to relate to.
Regarding the whole irrationalgames Digital factory movement thing they got going on... I dislike it, It's only but the first of many...Safe and less ambitious games will rule our future in a digital way IMO

The problem is that Donte wasn't designed as an unlikeable character. It's the fact that they were trying SO hard to make him cool that really made him unbearable
And nobody plays crazy action games to relate to the characters. That is the silliest thing you've ever said probably

And you -could- relate to Dante
He was a coolass demon hunter, but he spent his time sitting around eating pizza and enjoying his life instead of chainsmoking and being angry at everything

And when Dino started gloating about murdering the woman, that was when he went from being unlikable to irredeemable.

Relate in a sense where these characters are Identifiable...Not necessarily "close to home"... For example: The movie Django (all I can think of that has this clear example ATM) Jamie Foxxs role was and probably would never win an academy award... but the supporting characters did. Not necessarily because of the Acting but how their roles were more "realistic". Jamie Fox played the role of the bad a** invincible hero - similar to old Dante... The character is cool but it'll never be trophy worthy.
If of course Dante was supposed to be cool in this reboot then yeah, he was pretty terrible. But when I played the game I got a different vibe from his design...One that said Immature Dweeb with *potential* (typically) written all over it. or maybe I just cannot fathom failure on such a high level giving the character the benefit of the doubt.

Again, nobody plays Devil May Cry for realistic characters. The series is about f*** BOSSES and TEN BILLION HIT COMBOS and DANTE IS SO GOD DAMN COOL
There's a place for realistic characters. Fast paced action games is not that place

Devil May Cry definetly relies on the characters, as they have more or less become cult icons. Rebooting the s*** out of it was pretty ballsy.
Kinda weird that, instead of making Dante DLC for everything to cash in big time, they've decided to drag the franchise away so much from the character (see: Nero in DMC4). I think in the long therm making the series rely on gameplay is better, so that we don't all drop the games as soon as we get bored of Dante.

That's the thing though
They reboot the game but they still give you DLC to look like the actual Dante (kinda)
It's not "ballsy" at all

What it is, is it could've been ballsy, but they pussied out at the end.
