I really think DK is high-tier/mid-tier now.
He received nothing but buffs.
Down-B send the opponent towards DK, bair has improved hitbox, DK is faster, nair feels better, but maybe that's just a result of DK'being faster. Up-B has been buffed of course, both as a recovery move and an offensive move (covers more distance, goes faster)
making DK's recovery one of the best in the game.

DK overall has excellent neutral-game with that great bair, fast nair, huge range overall (Down-B, tilts...)
Great combo game, pretty much every move is viable and can chain to another.
He has plenty of kill options (Neutral-B, all 3 of his smashes, Up-B, bair, fair, dair)
Good edgeguard and great offstage game now.

Really his only flaws are his size, weight and falling speed that make him really vulnerable to combos, but that also means he can survive longer.

How is DK's recovery one of the best in the game? I think it's one of the worst in the game: low vertical distance, vulnerable to spikes and ranged attacks (Haste absolutely wrecks DK), easily predictable, and slow.

Huge horizontal disjoint, super armor on the beginning, big pimp-smack hitbox, and better vertical distance than before I guess. Iunno about "one of the best" but it's much better

You can repeatedly press the special button to make his recovery go much higher, at only the cost of some horizontal speed. He has one of the better horizonlal and vertical recoveries now.

There are better recoveries in the game but it's still excellent.
In term of distance it's amazing, you can recover from the blast zones just with UpB. Even when you're pretty low. Which is amazing because that means for example that you can offstage, and kill your opponent and recover using one single move. Who else can do that ? Double Jump offstage, kill and come back on stage ? Not many characters. If you're sent high and you still have your jump then you can recover from pretty much anywhere thanks to DK's good air speed.
And it's not that predictable/easy to edgeguard, it has great air speed, mobility, a permanent hitbox around it that can or example shut down missiles, prevent the opponent from hitting DK with a short range move or at least make it more difficult. Anything that hit from above can be avoided by going left or right.
Also you can adjust the vertical distance you cover, so you can "sweetstpot" the ledge whether you're far from it or close.

One of the best things about MK's recovery is that he gets to choose the distance that he travels with all of his moves (except for D-spec). DK can choose how high or low he wants to go with his U-spec, and can get back to the stage way easier because of that. Most characters would kill to have the ability to do that.

DK does have a great recovery but what I think the other guy meant is that DK still has flaws in spinnin kong ( which is perfectly alright cause it's still amazing.) Like DK still has his hurtboxes on his head and feet. Like you said you can still just move left or right to avoid it but this also means you have to sacrifice some horizontal distance. But it kinda doesn't matter cause he has that amazing ledge sweetspot omg.

is there any reliable way for donkey kong to deal with projectiles? his size makes it difficult to dodge them and hand slap leaves him pretty vulnerable to follow-ups.

Obviously depends on the projectile, but he can cancel physical projectiles like Samus' missiles with nair and bair. His also cancels both types if missiles, and the dtilt lowers his hurtbox so you can go underneath her strong missile. Energy projectiles have to be dodged or powershielded.

DK has amazing tilts, he can ledge cancel his dash cancel tilts, and he can hog the edge with his up b on stage like bowser in melee. He also has amazing combos at every% this character is amazing.

DK isn't my main, but he's definitely been my best character, since the days of 0.8. And he's only gotten better since then. All I really wanted was a better recovery, and damn, did I get it.

Now I just have to increase my mashing speed.
