Hey, its not like i said use everything from sonic 3, there's nothing wrong with using the same setting, so long as there is new levels (or at least different ones) and new bosses and such. And plus you could add, that since its right after sonic 3, its in the same time period, eggman has reused old bosses before, i dont see why he cant use em again.
The problem with this is that EVERY boss and level was ripped from Sonic 1, 2, and 3. It would be ok to have some old levels, but the whole game just had a bunch of things from the game preceding it.

Ive never played Sonic 4, but having this game take place in the same setting as another, i just dont see a problem with it. The problem lies with the mediocre level design and reused bosses (if theres no new ones), is what i get from you.
EVERYTHING was reused from a previous game. The levels, the bosses (they were carbon copies too), and even the special stages. In a SEQUEL, this is a problem.
By that logic, you might as well just bash Sonic Generations, the only thing unique in that game is the final boss, EVERYTHING else was reused from older sonic games.
The gameplay is what makes this different. That, and the fact that Generations is an anniversary game and isn't a direct sequel to the classics. Playing stages like Green Hill as Modern Sonic is a completely different experience than the original version. And the bosses play a lot differently than before. In Sonic 4, they are literally just carbon copies of old bosses.

Good points, ive never played Sonic 4 so i didnt know that the stuff reused was carbon copies. Wow, so Sonic 4 turned out to be a faliure right out of the gate? Lets hope it can redeem itself later. The only problem with it was the level design and the nostalgia of the game. It feels like its not the "Sonic" we used to remember playing back in the days. Play one or all of the first 3 sonic games then play sonic 4. You'll see what i meant by that
