Could we have one of those? I realise that it would have to be closely moderated, inclusion into that section would have to be restricted and there'd have to be some sort of rule about unbacked opinions, but they're generally highly invigorating.

Actually, we USED to have one, but it devolved into a "b**** about members not in this group" section, so it was scrapped.

Maybe it could work, I guess, but a lot of debates are sensitive or even downright controversial, so it'd be hard to do right.

Perhaps if it was more organised? Like instead of being basically what Logical Discussion was, make it more like an actual debate?

Well, maybe if every topic was handled specifically, not giving the members a right to make their own topics at their whimsy, instead having each topic created by a moderator... Yeah, we'll discuss it.

I don't like this. Aside from the fact that there is the odd moderator who I don't trust to even be able to have a debate without declining into personal attacks and abusing their mod powers, there's also the fact that the range of topics that could be discussed is so diverse that moderators can't be expected to come up with all of them, and it would be a hassle to have to wait for a PM to be replied to etc.

With something like this, I'm not even sure all of the mods should be allowed in.

Finally, just something to add: since entrance would be restricted (I'm assuming), could we have more than one gatekeeper? Looking at spam, there are people that deserve to be there but aren't, and I can see this sort of thing transferring to the debate hall.

As much as I hate to make a suggestion that supports TWO new usergroups, perhaps there could be one for being allowed in the section at all, and one for being able to create the topics?

And yeah Tid, that sort of thing could work. It'd be much neater and make the modding process slightly more transparent.

To keep the section from turning into "Let's all flame each other and everyone else we dislike" it'd probably need mods to watch over it 25 hours a day >_>

Moderator(s) wouldn't be the ones who'd have to come up with the subjects, they'd just be a checkpoint to ensure that everything would go according to rules. Measures like these would be needed to halt a repeat of last time, at least for a while

Also, and I'm going to make this quite clear, you're not the person to decide who "deserves" to be in or not, so you can't say anything about the spam section in that aspect, and frankly I couldn't care if you don't trust certain moderators, you're not in a position to judge them in what they can or can not do, that will rest on the administrators to decide.

After a trial phase to see that everyone in the group plays by the rules, such a measure would probably become defunct, meaning the ability to make topics would open to all members once supervision can be loosened a bit.

Mind you, so far these are just my idle musings, still waiting for the rest of the moderator group ('specially Cleod) to throw in their two cents.
