Hey, guys. I need help getting a bunch of computers in prime form. There's three different scenarios I need to take care of:

  • There's two laptops. My personal laptops, passed down to me secondhand. Both are Windows XP- no viruses, just natural wear-and-tear.
  • There's my home PC- a Windows Vista (don't say "vista sux lol") that, for several years, hasn't failed me at all, but it's been slowing down rapidly and now will barely even start up. It's not a virus- it was a misconfigured update which it keeps trying and failing to install.
  • A bunch of identical computers at school which the teachers turn to me to fix; They're all Windows XP, and for some reason, several of them take 10 minutes to start up. And that's on a GOOD day.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Just keep these in mind:

  • I'm no hardware expert. I'm a whiz with software, but I can't dismantle anything.
  • I CAN'T SPEND ANY MONEY. The laptops and PC have to be fixed in secret (Long story, please don't ask), and the school has almost zero budget.

I'll try that on the laptops, but I think the PC might be too far gone, and I don't know if I'll be able to do it on the school computers (The idiot teachers and the principal forgot the admin password, and the student account has ridiculous restrictions.)

I'll try it, anyway, and let you know if it works.

for your vista update issue boot into safe mode and do a system restore to before you installed the update

for your school comps either

a) dont do them in secret and use the xp disc that came with the computer to do a fresh install
b) do what whim said and just defrag+fix registry
but if they take that long to boot up it will probably take a long time to defrag so your ~*~*secrecy*~*~ may be COMPROMISED

natural wear and tear can't be fixed without buying new hardware - stuff dies, thats just how it is
