Smash Island VII
Smash Island VIII
Smash Island IX
Smash Island IX.5

Here it is; the big one. Doq and I are proud to officially announce what we hope to be the largest tournament in the SSF2 community to date; the epic crossover, Smash Island X.

The tournament will begin on Saturday, March 28th, at approximately 14:00 EST, and last until approximately 18:00 EST. Seeding is based on the X scoring system, while tiebreakers are done using the Flash Collective Rankings. The bracket is not finalized until about 5 minutes before the tournament actually begins, so stop complaining about bad seeding the week before the event. Anyone who fails to check in before the event will be dropped from the bracket. Anyone who checks in, but fails to show up within 30 minutes of the tournament's beginning will be dropped to losers. Anyone who fails to show up for an additional 15 minutes will be dropped entirely.

Each round will last approximately half an hour. I can push back a deadline if necessitated by a lack of finished matches. If all matches are played out before the deadline, the next round will immediately start. The bracket will be updated as each result comes in.

All finished match results should be posted in the IRC channel in the following format:
!X defeats Y 0-0

If the other player does not show up to fight, get a hold of me before the match deadline indicating this. If the match isn't played out before the deadline, the other player will be disqualified from the match.

Main Rules:

  • Double Elimination
  • 3 Stocks, 7 minutes
  • Items disabled
  • Hazards disabled
  • All matches are best of 3, except for winners/losers/grand finals, which are best of 5.

Stage list:

This tournament will use the current Backroom Stage List.

Code:
  Neutral:
    Battlefield
Final Destination/Nintendo 3DS (both stages can be stricken at once)
    Smashville
    Stadium III
    Yoshi's Story

  Counterpick:
    Jungle Hijinx
    Warioware
    Dreamland
    Tower of Salvation
    Castle Siege
    Dracula's Castle
    Sky Sanctuary Zone

Stage Striking:

Players will use the 1-2-1 striking system to determine which neutral stage to use for the first game. For all subsequent games, the winning player will strike 3 stages from the list above, and the losing player will pick from the remaining stages. You cannot choose the last stage you won on in the current set.

Lag:

The tournament requires the most recent version of SSF2 as of the tournament date. A desynched game will be played on the same stage with the same characters. If desynching problems continue, make sure that both players have the client-side version of the game. If multiple desynchs occur, or if an argument arises over desynching, I will personally determine the outcome of the game based on the replay information. I'm not an idiot; I can tell when someone is faking a desynch.

If a match takes longer than 45 minutes, I will forcefully end it. If a winner is ambiguous, I will advance whoever I deem the stronger player based on past results.

Other Rules:

  • If time runs out, the person with the most stocks left wins. If both players have an equal number of stocks, whoever has a lower percentage wins. If the percentage is also equal, play a 1-stock 3 minute match with the same characters on the same stage to determine the winner. Repeat as necessary.
  • If the match ends with a move that kills both characters simultaneously when they are each on their last stock, the player who performed the move wins.
  • If a player pauses the game, they forfeit their current stock. If their opponent loses a stock as a direct result of the pause, the player forfeits an additional stock. If the opponent loses their last stock in this manner, the player automatically forfeits the match.
  • All of the top 8 matches will be streamed. Both players can request to play their games offstream if lag is an issue, under the condition that they save their replays for use on the stream.
  • Excessive stalling is not allowed (walljump camping, reapeated use of Purin's Rising Pound, scrooging, etc.)
  • Gentleman's Clause is in effect. Any of the above rules may be averted if both players agree to it.

Now, go sign up on Challonge!

So this is the first X monthly where I am not at the forefront of organizing. No that isn't a bad thing. However...

This is a different tournament from X1, X2, and X3; as it is a hybrid ruleset with the (in some aspects more popular) Smash Island ruleset. We've taken the best competitive SSF2 has to offer and rolled it in to one mega tournament--the only thing we're really missing is the exposure Hypest gets, but that's not of the point. This is most likely the largest experiment I have done, ever. And because of it, I would like to personally tell you that this should be the largest SSF2 tournament in the history of both the X and Smash Island series.

I hereby present to you--the competitive SSF2 community--the Smash Island X.

I promised a few users a trailer but my main server has ded, so have an image file instead.
Tentative and not final: show

Losers.

I've decided that I'm going to update the seeding in real-time for this event, rather than waiting until the last minute. Should save a good amount of time during the actual event.

Aaaaaaaand it's official. The Reddit campaign failed. I think we got maybe 1-2 people from it, so as far as I can tell SSF2 is dead to them. Oh well, it should still be fun assuming everyone who signed up shows up at the event.

It's cuz Hypest owns /r/smashbros.

Everyone knows that.

I wonder how many of those people will actually show up.

Hoy Doq, maybe you can make a topic on /r/smashbros for it. I already made one before, and I don't want to come off as being pushy.

idk if this series does it, but the hypest series didn't:
remove people that don't show up for check-in instead of DQ'ing them so that the tournament bracket doesn't have any DQs in the first couple of rounds.
honetly not sure why hypest didn't remove people that were no-shows for check-in.

thank you ;0

I've had a couple of times where someone did check in, but then went AWOL for the whole event, so it does happen every now and then. It's rare though.
