That being said, if character bans per were allowed per round to every competitor... how do you guys think the competitive Smash scene would look?

making it so no one can use their best character would be pretty lame

Honestly, if that's what it took to stop seeing the same spammed top-tier characters and the ultimate Fox crap-out that wins just about every tournament I've attended and seen, I'm all for it. Games lose their flavor when that happens.

You must not attend or watch many big tournaments then. Character diversity is pretty high and Fox is among the least successful characters as far as major tournament victories is concerned.

The last such tournament won by a Fox player before Mango won Evo 2013 was in 2007. Fox is not a dominant tournament character by any stretch.

Maybe it's because seeing people win and dominate with high-tier characters just sets off this alarm in me to notice more.

Still... do you really think character bans would really be that bad?

Say a competitor mains Charizard. But only knows how to play high-level Charizard. The other guy plays Meta Knight. But only Meta Knight. See what I'm getting at?
They end up playing a half-assed Ike ditto that noone wants to watch. People wanna see matches where the players are at their best, not half-ass with a secondary. Some characters may be too strong, but banning characters like stages isn't the way to go.

I would understand that concept better if limiting your competitive abilty to one character was acceptable. And because I'm completely ignorant of whether it is or not, it seems to me like whoever did/does that and thought that mastering one character made you good enough to compete without fear of hard-counters or stage counters needs to re-evaluate how competitive gaming works.

Please do not tell me this actually happens.

Congrats dude that's the most retarded post I've seen in a while

Banning characters is stupid. If you don't understand why without people explaining it to you, you're the one who "needs to re-evaluate how competitive gaming works".

Why are you defending the idea that playing only one character is a good strategy in the grand scale of competitive fighting games or competitive games in general?

And if you're not doing that, then why aren't we at least looking at the positives instead of stomping the idea into the dirt?

Playing one character is fine because you only need one character to play the game. It's that simple. Yes counterpicks are a thing and that's why you learn to deal with them. That's the thing you do to get better, not, "Oh X loses to Y, better play Z so I don't have to deal with it"

I'm not "defending" that at all. Don't put words into my mouth, you little s***.

It's f*** simple. People use the characters they want to use. If you don't like that, f*** off. Competitive play does not exist for your entertainment.

I'm still looking for reasons why character banning would be a bad thing in this. If anything, it'd force people to experience more of the competitive side and further improve their skills.

So, besides it "being stupid," what are the cons to banning?

Uh... besides having people not play their mains. That's a pretty big one. The biggest one I can see, at any rate. Prolly why I can't see the other ones, honestly.

EDIT: Hey, I finally rustled your jimmies, Kyuubit, you little tosser. Still, I want more reasons than just these.. People like to play characters, good. People have best characters/mains. Good. What else? Please, I'll be as patient as I can.
