Seeing that it was my first theatre experience, it is hard to say, since I don't have any other theatre productions to compare it with.
But, it was absolutely super-fantabulous. It provided a very clever backstory to The Wonderful of Oz, and used both the elements from the movie and the novel. It is, more say, a love story rather than an adventure or actiony one, but it disguises it well and the love elements are really obvious except near the end.
I really, really, really, love the songs in it, then again, it's a musical so the songs really should be good. If you really want to hear the songs, there are some songs (full version yay!) on the website. I can't be bothered going to the US site, so here's the songs on the Aus website (they will be the same, since these are from the Broadway recording from the Soundtrack (FYI, the songs may sound different when you actually watch it due to actor changes etc) The costumes, are super-fantabulous too, as are the sets.
