A massive earthquake has hit the north-east of Japan, triggering a tsunami that has caused extensive damage.

Breaking news.

New Zealand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii better be careful. Due to shock waves and what-not tsunamis could potentially hit these countries.

Even here in Chile they have triggered the alert systems. I hope things don't get worse. This country is barely growing again after the last year earthquake :S

Here's a good place to go for updates on this.http://www.weather.com/outlook/weather-news/news/articles/tsunami-threat-coverage_2011-03-11

This is very bad though. Worse that the earthquake in Haiti last year.

The Haiti earthquake was worse in terms of the effect.

Haiti had zero infrastructure before the earthquake, so when it hit, they were basically f***.
What makes it worse is that we sent all that money, but it obviously went into some fatcat's pockets, because Haiti has not recovered one bit.

Japan will recover, they have the resources it demands and their infrastructure is pretty tight.
They'll be fine.

I understand how some people want to be able to find humor in this, based on some of the jokes earlier in the thread, but at the end of the day, there have still been thousands of lives lost.

YouTube Video:

I mean, s***, I'm watching potentially hundreds of people lose their lives.

Nuclear reactors in Japan are getting pretty f*** up, the radiation in one's control room is 1000X the normal level.

Ah, well, as long as the stuff doesn't leak out...

They've already begun to move away all citizens within a 10K radius
Not sure how much that would help if those things start blowing up, but at least they're pretending to do something...

I see nothing wrong with nuclear power (I am an advocate of it as an alternate energy source), but we really need to find better ways to store the reactors themselves.

Would submerging them beneath the ground protect us better?
Of course I guess you'd need to fear earthquakes that could allow the reactors to leak nuclear energy into the soil and contaminate the land, but hey, we need to assess and dispute some risks as rare occurrences.

It's kind of silly to be afraid of nucelar radiation killing you when pretty much everything can kill you.
Why aren't we afraid of spoons?

Because it'd take a bit of effort for a spoon to cause a s*** of damage.
Nuclear Power is more prone to accidents, and the accidents are more prone to be earth-shakingly dangerous.

... Because when s*** goes wrong with a spoon, you don't find yourself gazing at a map 10 years later, seeing how dangerous it still is to go anywhere NEAR the location of where s*** went wrong?

Don't get me wrong, I'm pro nuclear power, but there are extreme dangers involved in it if the right precautions aren't taken, and simply handwaving the risks only increases the chance of something going wrong. (Contrast the Three Mile Island accident to the earlier Chernobyl to see what happens when it's handled with the right safety precautions)
