add different versions of the characters which are different in rarity but is actually just a recolored texture.

Make some characters limited time. If you don't get them in some stupid event, they're locked forever.

To make it worse, you need to have like a 1000 of the event currency to get them.
And you can only get 1-2 of them each stage with a 3 hour finish time.

On top of that introduce an "event pass" that has to be bought with real cash just to earn event currency

Also, include "leaderboard" to this event mode.
Every time you clear an event mission, you'll receive points.
You'll be ranked based on how many points you've got.
Getting a high-enough rank by the event's deadline rewards an Ultra Rare character, which requires lots and lots and lots of grinding.

Also, your rank will fell down if you didn't play the mode for a while, so you'll need to keep playing if you want to maintain your rank.

Make it so when the screen flashes due to taking a strong hit at extreme percentages (like 200% or 300%), the victim loses 2 stocks at once when KO'd by said attack

Add "Reverse Sandbag Soccer/Basketball".

All players are Sandbags.
The "ball" would be a randomly-chosen character (even another Sandbag).

Batman 1966 style hit effects and sounds.

Hit effects include a big POW!/WHAM!/etc that blocks/covers the entire screen for every attack that connects.

Make it so Black Mage's UpB can telefrag an opponent
