'Nother Chapter: _______________________________________ Chapter 2:
Dukor's Gift
Morning light took over the darkness, and dawn was commenc-ing. I still couldn’t get to sleep. “‘You’re cursed!’” I would say every time to the mattress when I woke up too early (which was quite often). I opened the door and then went for the couch. I fell asleep long enough to have a dream, but it was short. I tip-toed back to my room and lay there, and I always wished that I could sleep in it, but my parents’ rules are: Sleep in your own bed only. “‘I hate that rule!’” I would say as I stomped to my room turbulently. Then when I knew they were all asleep, secretly I would come onto the couch, then I would wake up a little earlier than my family. It was a good drill, but I didn’t get enough sleep; that was the problem. But the exercise is a good one. Rarely my parents are awake when I’m am awake. But when the do, they won’t let me sleep on the couch, or whatever- the-heck it is. The drill occasionally didn’t work. Only three times I’ve been caught, but I still do it. I began to sneak back into my room at 6:30; a time just before everyone else gets up. I began to fake-sleep. The door opened minutes later. I began to pretend to wake up as my mother urged me to wake up. “Wake up, honey. Wake up,” she persuaded. I opened my eyes gradually and pretended I was weary. “Hurry up! Or you’ll miss the bus. Hurry!” she said. I bolted out of bed and got my clothes.
School seemed shorter than usual, like 2 hours were taken off the clock. But I was glad; I needed a little time taken off my back. I came home after school and went straight to shooting some hoops. While I was shooting hoops, my mom called me in for dinner. After dinner, I hopped onto my bed, and tried to sleep. I soon realised that I couldn’t, so I faked rest. When the time was right, I walked out my door. Quietly, I shut the door and took a light step backwards. I felt something round and metal beneath my foot. “Ouch,” I whispered to myself as I lifted my foot. I stood astonished. Before my eyes I saw the same exact thing I had seen in my dream: “The Foreign-Looking Ring” known as Hülf (in my dream) . I picked the thing up. I gaped at the ring, dazed. “Oh my... What the heck is happening?!? Hadn’t I seen this in my dream?!? I…I can’t believe it! Was that—I think that was a vision, not a dream!” I exclaimed, “But still! This—this is impossible! I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming, I’m dreaming!” I dropped the ring and rubbed my eyes, childishly hoping that I was dreaming. I stopped rubbing and peered to where I dropped the ring. It stood there, unmoving and unfazed. I gave up, looking at it as if it were chortling at me over my failure. “Its real,” I said to myself frowning. I wearily picked the ring up. I started thinking whether or not to put it on. Eventually I decided to put it on. After all, I had a vision. Maybe it was meant to happen. I hesitantly put it onto my finger. It shrunk as in my dream, and then I was about to rub it. I stopped. “Maybe I should wait until I’m outside to use it,” I thought, “so I won’t have to wait for Mitzi and Milo to decide if they trust me or not.” I ran outside and into the dreary darkness. I strode to my dogs. “Now I have real proof for the dogs,” I said. I swiped at Hülf. Pain began to prickle at me like hot, wire-thin needles, even against my eyes. I closed my eyes tightly, but the pain went straight to my eyelids. I shut them tighter to absorb more of the pain in my eyes. I began to morph into a wolf, except a little differently than in my dream; it took a much shorter amount of time, and dark magic that looked like tiny glowing specks began to covered me. It was an unruly darkness. A black aura seemed to come out of it and dissappear... The specks of magic engulfed me, and I took form of a wolf. The pain faded. I opened my eyes. “Hello, Mitzi and Milo,” I said. “Th—The human?!? How’d you—How’d you do that?!?” Milo asked. “My name’s Ben, and if you’ve heard of Hülf, then you should know how I did that.” “The legendary Hülf? I never thought it would be real. But now here’s proof. How’d you know about Hülf’s name and power if you never seen or been a wolf before in your life?” “My dream gave me lots of hints; I had a vision of me getting Hülf. Anyways, there’s a favor I need you to do: if you see anyone suspicious or magical, like they’re going to kill someone, start barking like your life depended on it and attack. Then I’ll know if something bad is going on. Now I have to leave.” I jumped over my fence, and the real hunt for the wolves had begun. Since I already knew the way through the woods, because of my dream, it didn’t take up hardly any time. I howled once. I heard the voice from my dream. “It’s not a full moon, you know. Hey! Your not our kind. What are you doing here. Are you a—” “I’m no spy,” I said, turning my head towards the voice, “All I was doing was looking for you. I knew that when I howled your voice would appear. Anyways, I am not really a wolf; I am a wolf now, but its because of something you know of. Something called, Hülf. I know you know what it is.” “Hülf?!? You have it?!? Well you better be prepared! There’s gonna be a lot of enemies trying to kill you! You—” “I already know enough about what’s going to happen to me because of this ring!!! All I want is to meet your master, and train with you to prepare to fight my enemies. And I want to fight with you because I had a dream that I got Hülf, and I met you in my dream too, and I got to know you, plus I fought with you for training,” I explained. “Our master is not feeling well, and demands for everyone to stay away from him…that means you! So you can’t see our master. And if you want to train, then let’s train. If you already faced me in a battle once, than I bet you beat me…or did I beat you?” “I beat you.” “That’s what I thought. Well, now its time you met clones of the enemies of the past-bearers of Hülf,” he said. The training began. First he brought out a cloned black, one-eyed, magical monster that had spider-legs. He said, “‘If the enemy is standing on land, then they are most powerful. If you bite the enemies neck, they will die.” Then right as he ended, I cried out, “‘You’re disgusting!’” He replied, “Okay. Training’s over!” “No!” I shouted, “Okay I’ll do it.’” Then I did the most disgusting thing I’d ever done in my life. At least that’s what I thought until I actually did it. I guess my wolf instincts were kicking in and I didn’t feel so cruel. After a while of training I began to remember my limited time as a wolf. “I think its about time for me to turn into a human,” I said, “But…I need a favor when I’m a human…I need to ride you to get to my house, because obviously, humans can’t run as fast as wolves,” I said. “No problem, as long as you return the favor someday.” I nodded my brown, wolf-head. I looked down at my forefoot and the ring’s design began to glow. Then the transformation with the magic commenced. I was on my knees as if I was a dog (because I was just in wolf position), so I used my hands and pushed myself off of my knees and stood. “Well this is what I look like when I’m human,” I said. I went over to the wolf and climbed on his back. He looked up at me, then foward And then we were off, with me astride the wolf. The wolf stopped near the city. He smelled the ground and then headed the direction of my house. “He can smell out which way my home is?!? SWEET!!!” I thought to myself. The wolf had smelled the entire way to my home. I dismounted the wolf. I smiled at him and gave him a nod. He nodded back, and dashed back to the mountains. I watched him until he dissappeared from sight, and ran into my house. I tip-toed over to my parents room and peeked inside. They were both asleep. Just as I was going to leave I heard the covers rattle. I peeked again. My dad was awake! I quickly but quietly ran to my bedroom. I flopped onto my bed, pulled the covers over me, and closed my eyes. My dad sleepily walked into the room. He looked around, muttered something, and then walked back out. I opened one eye, and then the other. “Hopefully I’ll dream more about being a wolf, then I won’t have to train as much in real life!” I closed my eyes... Creeeeeek. “What?” I exclaimed, woken by the noise. I lifted my head. I looked around the room. “Hmmmm.” I laid back down. Thump! I lifted my head up. I looked over the edge of my bed. I couldn’t see anything. I heard a soft footprint. I sat up all the way up. I leaned of to the end of my bed. All I saw was the bed’s shadow. “That’s weird,” I said. Then something formed out of the shadow…the one-eyed monster I had faced as a wolf! I stood there like a tree, unable to move. I gazed at it, then I quickly reached over and rubbed the ring. Nothing happened! The monster jumped on me, forcing us to roll off the bed. I kicked him off. I picked myself up and rubbed the ring again. Again, nothing. I growled at it. I grabbed onto it and suddenly the design of the ring began to twist around the rest of it. The beast jumped onto me, but I quickly launched him away. I quickly glanced at the ring as it reached its original position. The ovals began to glow and illuminate. My eyes widened as the lustrous light grew blindingly sharp. Then the entire room lit up with complete whiteness. I felt my transformation begin just as it happened in my dream. The light faded and I looked at myself. I was a wolf. “What just happened?” I asked myself. The one-eyed beast looked over to me. I jumped at it. A dark magic came and held me in front of the spider-monster. I growled. Then I was thrown over to the other end of the room. I rolled on the ground, hitting the wall, and quickly got back on my feet. I looked at him, then at the barely-opened door. I ran towards the door. I opened the door farther with my nose and rushed through the door. The monster jumped and landed near my parents doorway. “Mom and dad cannot see this.” I rushed at him. I bit him fiercely. I threw him onto the ground, and ran out to the frontyard with the monster right behind me, limping, but still quick. The monster jumped and landed next to my tail. I turned. I went to attack it, but it dodged my attack. I kept attacking it and it would either dodge it, or use its Black Magic (as I call it), and throw me. I jumped for it again, but it used its Black Magic. I couldn’t attack it anymore. I let my neck bend towards the ground. I soon lifted up my brown head. The monster jumped up in the air and used its spear-like spider legs and pinned my tail to the ground. “There’s no way to hurt the real one-eyed beast! Its almost nothing like the cloned one…unless”, I told myself. I used a wolf’s sense. There was a weak-spot behind his back, and on his legs. The number one weak spot was his back. “Maybe if I could bite its legs for a distraction, and then go around and bite its back.” I bit the legs that pinned me. “Aaaaaahhhh!” It screeched. It removed its legs from its position. I went around and bit its back. It screeched the same way except in more pain than last time. I did the same drill over and over again. Finally the monster landed on its back. I jumped onto it and bit its neck. The monster screeched in agony. It stood up. It attempted to charge me, but swayed side to side and then fell to the ground. It began to turn into the same bits of magic that had turned me into a wolf. The magical bits came together and formed a sword inside of a beautifully carved scabbard. I went over to it and held out my paws as it fell into my grasp. I bit the handle and drew the sword. The sword’s blade was beautifully crafted and razor-sharp. The blade’s hilt had a purple grip, and an oval lapis lazuli gem on the top of the hilt, with writings from some foreign alphabet at the top of the fuller. “Is it the medieval time or what?!?” I wondered, “but it is cool! If I were human—” The magic came over me and turned me human, but this time, the specks weren’t black, they were glowing and white. “What? Wait a minute…right as I thought of being a human, I turned human. “Is this like an upgrade to the ring?” I asked myself. “Wolf!” I thought. I turned into a wolf, but the magic was dark again. “Huh. I guess my theory was right. human!” I thought. I turned into a human with the light magic again. “I guess by thinking or saying of becoming it, I can become a wolf or a human without having to rub Hülf or wait for the design to glow.” I walked over to the sword and picked it up. “Thank you for destroying that Twilir. I have been praying for that evil magic to withdraw from me,” a voice said inside my head. “Who is that?” I asked. “The blade, of course.” My eyes struck amazement. “How can you speak to me?” “Shhh! Speak through your mind, for I will hear you. I am Dukor, God of Light,” the blade said. “That monster wasn’t even a monster; it was a dark magic. Without me, it would have just been nothing but a spirit that couldn’t even hurt a soul, unless it overcomes a human, of course. This blade is not me, but I can speak through it and see through it. The magic the monster is made up of is called Twilir. It used my magic in the blade to become a mortal, powerful, beast. The Twilir’s power depends on who it will effect. The dark and light magic is called, Liteve. Twilir can’t take over just a god, but any living thing, except for you. Hülf keeps any Twilir, or any other dark magic from entering your body. Please, take this blade as a gift of my gratitude; it may be of some use to you.” “All right.” I sat there for a few minutes thinking about what I’d just witnessed. A god? Talking to me?!? Trusting me to use his blade?!? It was amazing that that could happen to me. Especially me! I was just some average kid at our school, and then suddenly I’m turning into a wolf and talking to gods? I was either insane, or the history teachers left out a huge part in class. After I had finished asking myself questions, I ran back into the house. I hurried and hid the sword, then ran to my bed and got my pillow. “Maybe I might have the 'wolf power' taken from me, or I can’t kill one of my enemies as a wolf, I might need to be human and use the sword,” I told myself. I flopped myself onto my bed. The events of today were too much for me to fall asleep, though, so I just thought the whole night about what the future held for me me... ____________________________________________________________________
