I have been planning on buying a high performance computer since late 2011. As a student, I have no reliable source of income, so I need to purchase something that will last. Also, mobility is a necessity, so I have decided that this would have to be a laptop. I currently have 1000 murrican dollars saved up, I can't go over that. I need something that is suitable for gaming, and has decent processing power. I have had the money to purchase the said laptop since early 2012, but I have been waiting for the next generation in hardware to spring up. Should I keep waiting a few years, or should I go ahead and buy? I am looking into HP and Asus. I would appreciate any feedback.

If you're looking for something reliable in gaming, I suggest an Alienware M14x.

Pretty good processing speed, made specifically for gaming of course, reads BR's, up to 6GB of memory, HD graphics, and it's just awesome.

It starts at $999, check out the different ones you can buy here (based on how much memory you want, etc).

do not buy an alienware computer whatever you do

asus and toshiba make very reliable laptop computers, look for the best you can get with your money and go for that (id recommend trying to get at least an i5, 4gb RAM and some dedicated graphics - if you can go above that then you should be set for a fair while)

I guess if you like lighting up your smokes with 100 dollar bills then I guess it doesn't matter to you.

Well, Asus's line of laptops isn't half bad. Their ultrabook line is very respectable, as is Toshiba's. A few years ago I would have recommended a thinkpad from Lenovo, but they've been throwing out everything that made the original thinkpads good - namely the indestructible everything and the trackpoint.

I would pick the UX52VS from Asus - touchscreen laptops are still very much an immature field, and you'll probably want the numberpad for the extra keyboard space when you're play SSF2 with friends. It's a very respectable laptop, although I question the wisdom of buying a laptop now when we're so close to Intel's launch of Haswell.
