This seems better to me, given it is still possible to revoke voting rights for certain crimes.

Actually, significantly more aren't descended from European convicts then are and almost a quarter of the population came over the last two generations. It's the sort of thing that could quickly be changed if people didn't like it and yet very few people complain.

Then again, it's not like voting's optional here either so it's only logical that giving criminals the right to vote should follow suit.
