That's EXACTLY what Term is saying. "He didn't even make it BACK as an Assist Trophy because the dev team didn't think he was popular enough with mainstream gamers."

Usually characters who didn't make it to playable characters because of one reason or another (i.e. not popular enough) end up as Assist Trophies (i.e. Takamaru) but even that is something they didn't think Isaac was popular enough for this time around.

They didn't cut him from the AT roster to 'maybe add him as DLC who knows lol'.

If they cut him from ATs to add him as a playable character, they would have done so.

Game's been out for over a year bro, if he was cut from the ATs to be playable he'd be in the game already

I've been thinking of the whole Smash 4 ballot and who'll actually make it in. The thing is I'm going to look at this from a developer's perspective, so 3 ballot picks, and then 2 characters for commercial purposes.

(no particular order)

King K. Rool - ballot #1 pick
Isaac - ballot #2 pick
Shantae/Wolf - ballot #3 pick (not sure who is winning right now)

Inkling -
1. Inkling has a model in the game with a trophy.
2. Splatoon is one of the best selling Wii U titles, and for people who haven't played it, Smash would give them
that extra oomph to go play it.
3. Another highly requested character.
4. Parts from the male Mii Costume can be translated into an alt costume. With the female model already completed.

Some Rhythm Heaven Character -
1. Rhythm Heaven icon has been datamined
2. Every enemy in Smash Run has a playable character, except for Polar Bear with Ice Climbers, but Ice Climbers
were planned. So they most likely didn't want to cut the enemy in the end or it would've been all for nothing. Then
we also have Sneaky Spirit from Rhythm Heaven which may hint at some Rhythm Heaven character being playable.
3. Sakurai loves Rhythm Heaven, I don't have a source for this, but I surely remember he had a deep love for it.
4. Some artist for Rhythm Heaven did come back to Smash to draw the backs of the trophies in Smash.
5. Would help advertise Rhythm Heaven 3DS, and maybe bring it to the states.

Sakurai did mention that any franchise with no future won't be considered. We Golden Sun fans are just clinging to the last 0.000001% chance of his return

Funny that was said even though is in the game. From the interview with Smosh had with Miyamoto, he said that he would like to invest in a new F-Zero game, but with a new controller interface or do something new with a system. Well yeah he should return since he was one of the original 12.

At least a Golden Sun game had been released after Brawl.

Someone supposedly spotted that new video added to nintendo's youtube channel before it went private. Most likely photoshopped but who knows.
"Set Sail for a Fight!" and it shows a scene not seen before with water... could potentially be either K. Rool or Shantae.
