The sad part is that L-canceling and Wavedashing aren't what made Melee a great game. Sure they gave you more options, but the engine is what made the game so much fun to play. The Smash engine (especially Melee's) gives you so much freedom in combat, that its always exciting. Smash 4 doesn't need to be another Melee, nor does it need to be another Brawl. Smash 4 needs to be its own game.

yeah, i really wish people wouldn't just throw those 'iconic' techniques around and be like THEY WERENT IN BRAWL HENCE BRAWL SUX BRING THEM BACK because it gives the competitive community a pretty bad image. 64 didnt have airdodges at all, let alone wavedashing, and it's still a great game. those things probably wont come back in smash 4 and im perfectly fine with that.

l cancelling feels really sloppy and weird to me anyways it has little downsides to it minus having to make it a force of habit

I wish it would be automatic like in SSF2, but it looks like it won't be that. @super You just noticed?

I don't get that tbh
if L-cancelling is automatic, it's not L-cancelling
it's just reduced landing lag
or am I misunderstanding

Yeah, that's pretty much it. But it's pretty satisfying to do easily. It makes heavy weights feel a lot quicker, which is always pleasing.
L-cancelling doesn't need to return, but L-Cancelling speed landing lag would be swell.
And no, the things I want isn't all that made Melee competitive, but it is a load of fun to use.

Brawl was the only game without L-Cancelling. Kinda like how Brawl was the only game with tripping. Trippings gone again, so that could mean something. yeah who am i kidding

yeah people are dumb and counter l-cancelling being not in brawl by saying it's just automatic but if it happens all the time then it's just everyone having shorter landlag animations lol there's a different thing in both brawl and ssf2 though called autocancelling where if you land in the very first few frames of the attack or the very last few frames it's crazy short landing lag, as if you'd just landed not during an attack.

64 didn't have L-canceling either; it had Z-canceling. Unlike L-cancel which cut landing lag in half, Z-cancel removed all landing. There is a huge difference between making a move have 12 frames of landing lag, and making a move have 0 frames of landing lag. @Tid: Melee and 64 also had auto-canceling.

oh cool. If only they brought Z-canceling back then that would be awesome.

i know, i was specifying that they were in ssf2 and brawl though because those games dont have l-cancelling unlike melee and kind of 64 @niayre they should definitely not bring back z-cancelling lol
