fruity loops is a good start, logic is supposedly pretty good ive heard
ableton is really good but it's kinda complicated. reason is supposedly pretty good. mixcraft is the most simplistic one to use, i think. i dont usually use DAWs for much other than occasionally making synths, i mainly use audacity and midi sequencers and stuff for my music

I really like logic pro but my googling around hasn't found me a good alternative for PC. I will give FL studio a try, though it looks like it might be kinda limited.
limited in what way? it's not the industry giant of external hardware support and live performance capability that ableton is but FL supports a massive range of VSTs and with enough tinkering and experimentation you can always get whatever sound you want.
also sports a simple and tidy GUI and the piano roll and sequencing functions are also really intuitive. it's a small but powerful tool if you use it to your advantage
