Add stamina mode, but it's the pokemon trainer's stamina mechanic instead.

characters' attacks will have decreased knockback and damage over time and their idle animation become more tiring.

Add a different kind of stamina mode where attacking, jumping and running all decrease stamina that regenerates when you idle or crouch and you get shieldbreak-stunned when you run out.

Also have a hunger meter, where if you go on for to long without eating Food you instantly get a stock removed
