Lullabies in a Glass Wilderness by Katie Jane Garside
Preview: Darkangel / Lesions in the Brain

I've got kind of a story with this album. I keep a list of the albums I'd like to listen to in a .txt file on my laptop, and this one's been there for as long as I can remember. I don't recall listening to a preview of it, I don't remember where I heard of it or who recommended it to me, and every time I looked up information about the album I only became more confused about its identity - everywhere I could find a description of it had different genre tags, and they all painted Katie as insane. This coupled with its mysterious appearance in my txt file made me almost nervous to listen to it.

And rightfully so, it's an unsettling f*** album, at times downright disturbing. While the first preview track is dark and pretty, the second is difficult to listen to in a way. Like Nix said, the album goes in a lot of different directions, with several different sounds and ideas, but the very dark atmosphere remains constant throughout.

I think part of what makes it scary to me is the whole mental health aspect, though. As Nixter said she's legitimately insane and reclusive. As someone who has had experience with mental health issues, the concept of it all scares the s*** out of me. I dunno if the album will have the same effect on you if you've not been around that kind of thing before, though.

Rating: I'm gonna call it "Good", although comparing it to the other things I've listened to seems somewhat impossible. I don't think I'll spin it often, for my own mental health.

If this seems interesting - it is. Give it a spin.

Sage Francis - Li(f)e

This album is going in a different direction than his previous albums for sure. Going from standard hip hop style to indie rockers backing him is really interesting. It's not my favourite album by sage francis but it has its moments. The albums full of a bunch of interesting stories, (and some boring ones) with usually nicely written lyrics. The bands behind him is a new style but i think it works out really nice, he collabed w/ different people for every track. There's definitely some amazing tracks here but sage has done better and others do way better consistently. A lot of the lyrics are things I've heard him say plenty of times before. On the bright side, the songs with not so interesting lyrics tend to have some pretty awesome music in the background!!
6.5/10

Pure Reason Revolution - The Dark Third

Hot DAMN! Term recommended me this album, and what a f*** recommendation it was! Pure Reason Revolution is a progressive rock band that makes use of dual vocalists(one male, one female), programmed electronic synths and percussion, and a violinist to boot. First off, the intro track Aeropause is a beautiful art rock-esque instrumental transitioning into the well thought out Goshen's Remains and from there, well it's a damn journey. Everything is just a perfect fit, bleeding electronic patterns and sounds capes from track to track, diving in and out of programmed percussion to real live drums, to violin segments inviting the addition of amazing guitar riffs, layered vocals, and very, very, very interesting song writing as a whole, you get everything pleasant from the progression of progressive rock with the textures of embellishments, superb production, excellent vocal work, grooving and powerful drums, with everything from punchy basslines and crunchy guitar to soaring, clean and soft guitar plucks accompanying vocals that could be in an a cappella and sound great on its own, even a few jazzy feeling moments are explored like in the second half of the song Voices In Winter. You all should give this album a listen, because I sure as hell enjoyed it.

I rate this album a 9/10, give this a listen, people!

Blood for Blood - Outlaw Anthems: show
my friend sent me this album during a relevant to the album conversation and it really just makes sense to me.
this album is extremely aggressive, nihilistic & just rude. I can imagine my father writing these lyrics, and I can definitely imagine myself feeling the exact same way as these guys if I stayed in school. Now it's kinda negative for me but I think it's a really good album/band !!

Blood for Blood is a hardore band from boston(support boston hardcore!!). This albums all about growing up poor, having no family, having no future and how life is cruel and pointless. They get that point across easily. Basically just negativity, anti-social behaviour, hate, nihilism yeah that's the album. Love Song is a nice song. Finding friends and family out in the world when you have nothing. But most of its just nihlism. Oh and the guitar and drums are awesomeeeeeeeeeeeee(supposedly there's a bass?? legit can't hear it)

i seriously love this album 9/10 though i don't like listening to it too much way too negative man

The Wombats - A Guide To Love, Loss and Desperation: show
Is a really upbeat poppy indie band from liverpool. I found this band from my m8 snoble some years ago who sent me Let's Dance To Joy Division. Overall the lyrics are very simple. Young adult probs & all that. Not really lyrically interesting but that's not what makes this album. Most of the songs are really catchy and the ones that aren't still feel all bubblegummy. While there is a few great songs the boring lyrics and average pop isn't interesting enough to get me through those songs. Album is basically hit and miss but it does have some great songs!

6/10

Captain Murphy - Duality: show
I absolutely love this mixtape. Absolutely amazing instrumentals throughout the mixtape. There's references and tons of really weird & cool samples. Lyrics feel oddfuturey(earl is in a track too), I think that's the best (and easiest) way to describe them. Bonus points is the mixtape is released with instrumentals to every song, so if you aren't into the lyrics then thats cool enjoy the beautiful tunes. Albums great, gladly would listen to it over and over again. 9/10!!

ok there we go pumped out the last reviews ty bye friends get your flu shots

Jetone - Ultramarin

Image

Tim Hecker apparently was making ambient/idm/electronic tunes under the name Jetone before he started releasing music under his given name. Given my interest in Tim Hecker and my great appreciation for his music (or at the very least, his album "Ravedeath, 1972"), I was definitely looking forward to giving this a listen. I was kinda left... underwhelmed.

The greatest quality of Hecker's music, to me, is his earth-shattering atmosphere, and I found this album to be pretty lacking in atmosphere all together. There's drum patterns, there's ambiance, there are melodies, but nothing really came together in a way I found enjoyable. Even if you disregard Tim Hecker's other music, this is just kind of an average album. Nothing special.

4-5/10. I liked Thousand Oaks.

The Joy of Motion by Animals as Leaders
Preview: Physical Education

AAL doesn't really do it for me. A lot of the tracks on their debut sounded really neat, but a lot of it was just really wanky as far as I can tell. This is really only on my list because they'll be playing at a Devin Townsend show I'll be going to soon. (I'm sure they're cool as hell live, though)

The preview track is pretty cool but it's the only thing that really stood out to me on the album. Their debut explored more ideas/sounds, I thought. Joy of Motion got a little samey at times.

Oh and they're a djent band. Probably should've started with that

Rating: Okay

Finally caught up!!!!!

The Understanding by Royksopp
Preview: Only This Moment

Royksopp is a neat, chill little downtempo group whose name seems to pop up a lot as I explore that genre. The Understanding is p cool. It's a nice listen, but I don't really have a whole lot to say about it. Their previous album, Melody AM, is very good too! So you should give them a try friend pal

Rating: Good

BADBADNOTGOOD - III

BBNG is a electronic/jazz/hip-hop trio that have been making quite an impact on jazz-influenced electronic and hip-hop music, their first two albums been commemorated for their tasteful covers of famous hip-hop artists, such as Kayne West and J Dilla. Now that's the past, this new album of their's, III, is 100% original content, no covers here, unfortunately, this album doesn't pull through for a long while, a few cool tracks like Can't Leave The Night go hard, but it's mostly watered down playing until it reaches CS60, this beast of a track really pours that BBNG feeling in such an enjoyable way, while the other tracks are just mainly filler, this song really gives a nice feeling, perhaps with repeated listens this will grow on me, as it has for other people, but for now it's mainly just an ok record, it's worth keeping for me, but if I were to recommend some BBNG, my recommendation would be BBNG2

This album gets a 5/10, a stellar track with some filler tracks, perhaps I will enjoy it more in the future, we shall see.

I gave it a try today!

Royksopp - Melody AM

Term recommended this group, and being a fan of electronic / downtempo / instrumental hip hop music, I was pretty much looking forward to giving it a try! I wasn't disappointed! Most of these tracks are nice and cute and comfy and fun. Some tracks were kinda boring but most of them were nice. The tracks with vocals on 'em were the standouts, generally.

Overall, decent bleepbloop tunes. Not as fun as, like, Portishead, but still pretty neat.

6/10. I liked Eple, Poor Leno, Remind Me.

わたしのココ (watashinokoko) - 愛してるって言われたいの (i don't know how to romanise kanji sry)
free bandcamp albums, hit that up all day m8

I've listened to their other albums a lot but this album i wasn't too familiar with
So the first track is basically a screamer track. It's a beautiful track, starts really quiet and pretty. A faint vocaloid in the background and some other sounds. You can't hear it so you turn it up to normal listening volume. The song goes nicely for 50~ seconds, then with absolutely no warning NOISE. It's a really big f*** you, your ears hurt and you now realize you can't hear the vocaloid and you dont argue. It's an experimental band!!

Half of the album is pretty minimal with just some light ambience, the other half varies around (light)noise & electropop. Constant throughout the album are vocals provided by a lo-fi vocaloid.
Liking or not liking this album would go in order of not hating the vocaloid, then willingly listening to the album after track 1. I personally think that the layered noise is fantastic and the vocaloid sounds really pretty.

8/10 from me
a gentle noiseless song http://watashinokoko.bandcamp.com/track/--15
