Shukaku is his real name. Kyubi means Nine-Tails.

Ichibi means One Tail.

Shukaku, the Ichibi no Tanuki

Kurama, the Kyubi no Yoko

Not every name needs to be a reference to something or have some sort of significance. it could just be his name, although some people think it refers to a Japanese folk tale about a tanuki, not sure on the details though so I'll stop there.

Apparently on the piece of s*** wikia (like, its so bad, the translation team is awful and bigoted), the Shukaku name was the name of a corrupt Suna priest, a previous Jinchuriki.

For some reason I remember "Shukaku" meaning "drunk" or "inebriated" due to the way it fights. I don't at all remember where I read it though, so probably BS... Just tossing it out there though

Hard to tell, really. I predicted many wrong things about Naruto.

son goku is the name of a monkey-like asian folklore hero; dragon ball's man character is named son goku because he is a lot like the folklore bro re: he's a monkey-kid
the idea behind naming the tailed beast son goku is (i'm p. sure) that he is actually the son goku from the legend

history class is a great thing huh

I'm pretty sure it's at least a sly reference to DBZ, especially considering his host was named Roshi

i think son goku was a japanization of sun wukong, the original name

the novel is Journey to the West

kind of but, its mainly referencing to dragon ball Z. Kishimoto is a huge fan of the series

Most shonen authors have said they were all influenced by Dragon Ball, and Akira Toriyama was influenced by Go Nagai, who also pioneered shonen.

Wasn't Naruto influenced by Ninku?

When creating Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto incorporated into the character a number of traits he felt made an ideal hero: a straightforward way of thinking, a mischievous side, and many of the attributes possessed by Son Gokū from the Dragon Ball franchise. He also made sure to keep Naruto "simple and stupid," since he does not like smart characters.Similar to Goku :wee:
