i'm legit hoping we get more undertale stuff in smash
now that we're way past the point were most people stopped dismissing it as "ew cringe why it popular" and finally on the boat of appreciating this complete love effort of a RPG that tells such a wonderful story

If Undertale becomes the first indie game franchise to get a playable fighter (outside Miis) then ohhhhhhh boy



Also the Megalovania remix absolutely slaps so much, also great of toby to sneak Bonetrousle in there (at about 2:04)
It seriously makes me happy how much of a legacy this little RPG has

TBH it kinda deserves it though, arguably being one of the most popular Indie games of all time. The only other one I can think of right now is Cave Story if that counts.

But really, Daddy Sakurai just added sans undertale for the meme and Toby's influence, otherwise they could have added Frisk or something.

Cave Story is a great historical pick & undoubtedly influential but Undertale has the benefit of modern popularity

Shovel Knight is kinda in the same boat. I think he and Sans are probably the most likely picks for an indie character, if one were to be added. That is assuming we remove Minecraft and DOOM from the equation, due to their current ownership

Folks say this a lot but an important element of Undertale is that the human never has to fight if they don't choose to. It would be incredibly unusual to see them fighting nonchalantly

Sans would be a logical second pick even if he wasn't the most popular character in the game by far

I never really considered Doom to be indie tbh, seeing as how everyone making PC games in that wild west time was kind of in the same boat while id Software already had Keen and Wolfenstein to their name

I don't agree Sans is a runner up pick logically. By the same logic the human never has to fight if they don't choose too, Sans will only fight someone that kills literally everyone in existence, so either one nonchalantly fighting would be incredibly unusual in that case. I think the only character that's both a face of Undertale and would make proper sense as a fighter for fighter's sake is Undine.

Smash has a character that is literally the king of all evil and even he doesn't actually qualify for the Sans fight. Ironically Ganondorf is the most Frisk character in the roster, being a human that lead monsters back into the human occupied lands.

Ridley probably qualifies for a genocide run though with the whole genocide thing he did.

How does that make DOOM not an independent release

The difference is that Sans can and will fight, it's always on the table, but one of the most important aspects of the human's character is that (depending on the player) they may never fight at all

If you compare it to Isabelle, it is a bit odd to see her kicking the s*** out of Ganondorf. But that's because non-violence is an element of her character. With the human, meanwhile, non-violence may be their entire defining character trait.

Besides -- if you're judging based on personality, I could totally see Sans as the type to dick around with the Smash Bros fighters.

I know a lot of people are worried that Terry got overshadowed by Sans and Banjo being released the day of the direct, but tbh Terry's release day of "right now" is probably going to do the same for fighter pass character 5 next time. Since SNK has never been my jam all I can really do is meme that's he hat ken which finally confirms hat waddle dee is getting into smash, until I can actually see him being a character like anyone else I didn't know before smash, again come next direct.

yes he wasn't actually leaked but anyone familiar with SNK's games knew it would most likely be him as soon as they saw the copyright leak

sans meanwhile seemed like a complete impossibility lol. that reveal is way more exciting

doesn't help that they showed basically zero footage of terry as well

But that's only true for the Pacifist run, which is effectively only a third of the game.The player controls the human's every action. Frisk is just a puppet for us to do our own actions through them. If we go far enough on the violent side, Chara gets revived and takes over. You could just have Chara instead of Frisk if you really want to hammer in the violence part instead of non-violence. Just saying that I see no reason for sans to be the top pick outside of his "super difficult" final boss status, insane popularity and memetic nature. They could have just as easily picked Papyrus or Undyne or even Flowey.

Though I guess to 90% of the UT fandom, sans might as well be the only worthwile character, so I could just see it as pleasing the fans by adding their favorite character.

Also, I would have preferred Marco or Kyo instead of Terry TBH. Never got into Fatal Fury, but I did enjoy KOF.
