i think companies that make PC's running windows do that
Mac PC's last long but cost a lot
Windows PC's last not so long (they start breaking down after 2-3 years) but they cost much less
nintendo might be doing that too

Well, all I've been playing is Mii Plaza and Rhythm Thief, and I haven't had internet access on the 3DS all week, so I couldn't have installed any updates anyhow.

ah, i see. but still, the fact that you can see the power down screen means that the 3DS itself isn't messed up, and it's probably a software issue. idk what could've caused it, but i suggest you at least try an update next time you have internet access.
