I just got into Melee and I was wondering if there were any things I really need to know as I progress through, like L-Canceling or stuff like that.

for having just gotten into melee those are some very meta things to be trying to learn lol

just start out by focusing on your tech skill and making sure you can pull off the action you're trying to pull off a vast majority of the time, melee has a much higher execution barrier than other games in the series so this is a bigger deal than it sounds like! you already mentioned l-cancelling which is a good one to start out with, link's down-aerial is a great move to practice on since it's really obvious when you've l-cancelled it properly. you want to be hitting L just as your character's knee level hits the ground, but you have a bit of leniency on timing.

oh, that's a good point. at first i just typed stuff like "don't start your dash-dances in the same way every time" and then i was like "f*** it i'll just send the URL"

also, do NOT hard-press when L-cancelling. get in the habit of using soft-press (or using Z if you prefer that). it's better in the long run (hard-press makes it so you can't tech for the next 40 frames i think?)

hard-pressing is when the trigger clicks, think of something like airdodging. soft-pressing will bring up your shield.

Be able to short-hop consistently. It may sound really stupid and easy in practice but many players tend to accidentally full-hop when trying to go for a SHFFL especially with characters like Fox in actual matches.

Is there a list like that for Sm4sh? I suck a lot, and want to suck less.

Don't air dodge after too often after a grab to escape from it. If it's a habit people will get used just bait it.

Well, pretty much everything in that list tbh

my melee tier list.
-sheik and falco honestly both have strong enough cons/pros to where i dont think either is realistically globally better than the other.
-ics might be worse than samus because they lose hard to some widely played top tiers that samus doesnt really but i dont know the character well enough. they can wobble and samus cant f*** grab airborne dudes so they go higher for now.
-yoshi sucks really bad it's just that aMSa is really good. ganondorf is the same thing with kage except kage isnt as good as aMSa lol.

personally i'd say Falco is better than Sheik instead of tying them in the same spot

I agree. Falco's neutral game is just too good to be placed anywhere below #2 imo.
