Puzzling results from Cern, home of the Large Hadron Collider, have confounded physicists because subatomic particles seem to have beaten the speed of light.

Hopefully, other scientists will be able to shed some light on this matter.

A recent comment on that article wrote:

pff hahaha

But anyway, this is a interesting development. If it's actually confirmed.

There's also a xkcd comic about it.

They're still working on reconfirming it and making sure there was no error or anything, but it'll be revolutionary if it turns out to be true.

On TV, people said "the laws of physics were broken".
Dumbest thing ever, there is no such a law as "light is the fastest thing lol we no discussing this because we the most smart and we say so", it is the fastest thing we know so far, it has never been stated that it is impossible to have something as fast or faster.

But it is still cool to have found it out. I can't see any use for it right now, though.

It still isn't completely proven yet (as in duplicated by other people)
...right?

I suppose you're right and wrong in that sense. A lot of Einstein's laws of physics revolve around the speed of light being not only unobtainable, but also nothing going faster. And since light (supposedly) has been 'proven' that they aren't the fastest particles on earth, physics law has to be altered.

Light is often used for comparison, I have never heard it couldn't be "beaten".
But anyway, it is science and science is about studying things and making discoveries. So...

Maybe the particle fooled the system somehow, I don't think (but I may be VERY wrong here) it will change everyday life much anyway.

Alright, lemme try to do this off of the top of my hat... The speed of light (in a vacuum) is, the speed of something without an invariant or 'rest' mass in a vacuum, such as a photon. As soon as anything has any amount of invariant mass, the maximum speed it can achieve lowers.

Simply put, because light has no mass in rest, it is capable of reaching the maximum speed that matter and energy can travel at(which is also why it is used for comparisations). Faster should be, according to the current laws of physics, impossible.

And no, it wouldn't directly involve normal life, but it would turn the scientific community upside down. It would also mean that the "warp speed" or "faster than light" travel from science fiction, isn't really that science fictiony at all.

@Hakker
I know that...

What I mean is that (I didn't want to get into that conversation, but...) scinece isn't religion...
It has never been stated that photons are invariably the fastest particles, that it is the ultimate truth, it is not how science works. The physics laws aren't created by scientists, they already existed, they are studied/discovered by scients. Now, I know that many theories are based on light's behavior, and there's a reason for it to be considered the fastest wave/particle, which doesn't mean a different particle couldn't be found to be (because, again, stuff was already like this, we just didn't know it) faster for a different reason. And as soon as we find if the test was accurate we can fix some theories. And it isn't exactly like the "laws" (actually the theories) of physics will be changed, I mean, changed to something else, but just altered/fixed accordingly.

But it all comes to semantics, for example, to me the universe is "the whole thing", so I don't really think that "multiverses" exist, because to me they are still a part of the universe, which is infinite and round (it is infinite in every direction, therefore all radius are the same size, therefore it is a circle) or simply shapeless (because a circle is a human concept, the universe didn't "think" to make it a specific shape, nor it has a name for whatever shape it is).
But many people argue about that because they consider the universe to be something else (to some universe = the parts of space that matter has reached, which is growing). Same goes to god, music and other concepts.

And well, a SHIP most likely can't travel faster than light (even if it was made of such neutrinos), because there would be other particles (considering it is piloted by humans inside it) inside them (and even if these particles could be pushed/accelerated by them, the human beings would most likely die), but discussing that is a bit pointless for us right now.

basically what this means is
light has some form of "mass" that is currently intangible
maybe someday we'll have super awesome gloves that can hold it B)

It'll require the rewriting of a good few laws, but basically all it means is that light isn't quite what we thought it was.

Damnit, you can't "break" the laws of physics. If you could, they wouldn't be "laws".
