Researchers found that, far from being a sign of delinquency and poor academic ability, many adolescent "metalheads" are extremely bright and often use the music to help them deal with the stresses and strains of being gifted social outsiders.

The article is slightly poorly written, but being a metal fan born "gifted" by definition myself, it's intriguing.

it's a common irl trope that people in a time period's given "counterculture" (hipsters don't count as a culture idolizing superficiality is in no way counter to anything) tend to be above average
tbh i think this is because intelligence is socially crippling

Does the fact that I listen to classical music imply the same thing?

I'm not sure if it still applies after the age of 2
"Mozart makes baby smarter!" does sound a bit dodgy, as does saying that a preference to Metal Music is an indication of intelligence

It's not that metal makes them smarter. It's because they're smart that they often listen to metal music.

I think its less of an issue of musical preference so much as being part of the "metalhead" culture

Exactly.

I discussed this with some other guys about the ("our") subculture, and we mostly agreed that people who listen to metal are also the same kind of people who are misfits in regular society. Smarter kids might feel like they're out of the social loop, and they might end up listening to metal because many of the fans are also not as socially aware.

That was part of the point I was making
Normal, social savvy people usually won't listen to it even if they like it, because it has a very negative image
However less socially adept people don't understand the reasoning behind image (which is why they often dress like hobos and freak people out) so they just listen to what they like

There's a line between hygiene and "Image". Most people don't see it and that's why lots of the people that don't dress so fancy don't get accepted as easily, an image has been created for the people who listen to metal and what not - an image that doesn't necessarily belong. I know a lot of people that to listen to metal, they always represent wearing shirts or w/e but I've never seen any of them intentionally dress like s*** to fit the image.

Sorry I'm not trying to insult anyone but when people get to the point where they stop taking showers it gets pretty bad.
