As part of a broader gun control plan, President Obama is pushing Congress to fund research into the impact of violent video games.

Any thoughts on this?

the "effect that violent video games have on young minds" shouldn't even exist because "young minds" shouldn't be exposed to violent video games

If people do not want their kids to have violent games, then they should not buy the damn things. People need to stop debating over this. It's sad that people honestly think that violent games turn people into killers. Reality is reality and games are games. The only people that think there is some kind of "link" are the people that think this type of violence happens because of the games. Everyone needs to just calm down for a second and think this through. I'll just put this here. Go ahead and skip to 9:30~ish for statistics and such.

As long as Obama doesn't use this as a "OMAGURD GAMERS ARE THE DEVIL!" type of deal, I could care less if there is another study.

Remember that this all started from a Connecticut shootout with a 20 year old, not a kid. This means that he had the legitimate rights to purchase the game if that was the reason for the shooting (but it's probably not).

The problem is the debate on whether violent video games should still exist to this day. Remember that this is now being pushed on the congress to fund research and see the results in their eyes, not statistically published by another group. Our only hope is probably making sure that video games are not the most common cause for violence.

TotalHalibut does make good points in that video you posted, but probably not enough for the congress to believe so.

Give Black Ops 2 a serious look and tell me there's no way it can be psychologically traumatizing

Video games are as dangerous as taking a college course

College professors have a bunch of ideals that might rub off on you, and might cause someone to go on a killing spree

it's happened before

I don't get why society even tries to attack any kind of media. Mentally healthy kids who play those games are mentally mature enough to understand the difference between reality and a game.. Most kids who do the whole monkey see monkey do thing are probably too young to even comprehend what they're doing while playing the game. Plus even if they did grasp the violent concepts of a game they're not the age group committing these shootings.

I hate how most studies like this are conducted, for example in my psychology class we just started child abuse and s***. They did a study and the results looked like this (This is in America btw):
Of all reported abuses 90 % of abusers were white males

What the f***? Caucasian is the majority so obviously most abusers in America are going to be white.. If they're looking to give a general description of abusers like this then do a f*** study of all male, all female, each age group, and each race with the smallest groups being fit into an other category.

Point being they do the same s*** with video games and violence.

"We found that most of the serial killers had played a violent video game in a three year time period before the incident."
Oh really? and how many people in America play violent video games in total? And how many commit mass attacks of violence?
Oh just the mentally f*** ones? You're right violent video games need to be done with.

These are all resources that would be put to better use furthering our studies on the minority of highly impressionable youth who cannot differentiate fantasy from reality and make these horrible decisions. The people who do horrible things as a result of video games are almost always, if not always, unstable to begin with.

That said, I do think there should be more enforcement of online multilayer communities. At young ages, I don't think it's healthy for kids to get slaughtered over and over in an online game session because they aren't as skilled as the adults or teenagers they're playing against. It can lead to poor self esteem at an extreme age for such things.

But that's another conversation entierly

If I see my kid going psycho, I'll abort his a** despite his age.
I said "his" because if I get told I'm having a girl I'll have a wire hanger ready.

Reading bad papers just makes me wonder how they could have gotten it published in the first place.

I'll post what I said to a buddy of mine the other day

"Obama's calling for research on it, but Romney would've tried to ban 'em without the research. [..]"

Lesser of two evils etc etc

And I mean it's not really a bad thing. Maybe when the results of this study are released we'll have a much stronger argument for video games not causing violence. (Or at least, an argument morons are more likely to listen to)
