@THoT, yes those are both true.

The Anime is essentially Count of Monte Cristo in space/the future with a much more, dramatic ending. Don't get me wrong, the book had a nice ending, but it didn't seem very real, though the same thing can be said for the Anime.
I suggest watching this, it gives you an idea of the eye orgasm that is Gankutsuou.

Any anime taken by 4Kids automatically has 30% of its content remove. Think of what would happen if they took a truly explicit series like Victory Gundam, or Inuyasha. I predicit said series would last for 5 episodes.

Though I have to admit they can make good themes.
