Hey guys. Lemme start off by saying that yes, I know there's a section for this, but it's a subsection of a dead section. I need people to actually see this thread.

That aside, the current version of Trollbean is now in beta! All this really means is, the regional competition is in a few weeks, and I need some free bugtesters (I can be real about this >_>). I'd really appreciate it if you'd take the time to give it a play. It's designed to be finished in 5-20 minutes, so you won't be bothered for long. Honest opinions are wanted as well as bug reports. Have fun!

UPDATE: We won the State competition! This is now officially the best video game to come out of TN.

was playing it just now - not a bad platformer
sprite animations and everything seems smooth. music was a little grating on the ears, but fits nicely to the 8bit theme.

not sure if that jump is possible though, so i couldnt get past there. (the jump where you have to asplode a wall with a bomb before attempting the jump)

all in all quite a good game <3

It gets even better once you start getting some new skills (Don't blow up every single block leave at least one)

Really like it so far, I think I can say a game is pretty cool if you've died multiple times and don't quit :P

Only thing game wise that got in the way was a rare instant where my Jelly fish would get blocked by a corner

and the boss I was too scared to go upstairs and let him come to me and I didn't have to worry about his minnions following me until I beat the stage

I like how this makes no sense whatsoever.
Pretty cool but the music could be better, as said earlier.

I try. :p

Regarding that jump: You're not supposed to leave one block, there's a collectible above the Bomb that you need to fall to get. Should probably make that more noticeable, a good amount of people seem to be having that problem.

Regarding the music: ..Yeah, it's not great. But it's not awful (I quite like the boss music), and it's original stuff I got on short notice. It's.. okay I think.

Thanks for the comments guys, any more is appreciated.

Aghfshiugjfk. Norton does not like this file, and removed it when I tried downloading. Also it is hard to type random letters on an on-screen keyboard.

I'd imagine it'd be pretty hard to play on an onscreen keyboard

It's just blocking it because it's an .exe file. There's nothing I can do about that, unfortunately.

Seems good so far, though landing feels a little buggy if you hold jump for slightly too long. I think trollbean's attack should be a little more useful, maybe it'd be good if he had an attack while running and attack while falling animation so that you could attack enemies without losing momentum. I think that'd make him a little more useful, as right now the only reason to ever want to switch to him is to use Jelly. (this is especially true because with bombs, any character is able to attack just as well as he is, except probably sugarcane)

I kind of agree, a wider moveset would be useful. I tried that early in development, but couldn't get it to work. I understand GML a lot better now though, so it's worth giving another shot.

On another note, I've made a few bug fixes to the game, and am releasing it as v02.b. This is the version that will be used in the competitions coming soon.

EDIT: Oh, it also changes level 1 around a bit to make it more obvious what you're supposed to be doing.

I still might be able to play it as long as it doesn't require the Spacebar.

And Norton must just hate MediaFire or something. Not that I blame Norton.

...Then again, maybe Norton's just stupid. :hmph:

I'll find some way around it.

As I said in the Upcoming Games topic:

Trollbean won!

The regional game design competition at school. Placed first of four :p Not a ton of competition, but I'm pretty damn proud of it anyway. The judge said if we hadn't specifically mentioned that it was our first game under the "game's cons" section of the notebook, he'd have never known. Additionally, they loved the box art we cooked up:

Stuck it in a dvd case. Looks /awesome/.

Next up is the state competition, which will be held in April. Can't wait to see the judge's scorecards to see how to improve. Progress, ladies and gentlemen.

:D
